V1 cathode cap and filtering

Post by mrkrausman » Tue Apr 26, 2011 1:02 am

I am currently running shared cathode (820/220uf). My amp is a little bassy and too harsh and clean on the highs. I use only bright channel on Vol 7-8. Would lowering my V1a cathode cap help? What could I try to boost around 300-500Hz and lower bass response just a little. In other words, I would like to fatten up my lead sound. Also how would lowering the filtering from 50/50 to 33/33 affect the overall tone?

Lowering the bypass cap to around 3.3uF will reduce boomy bass and tighten it up. It won't really add the mids you mentioned though.

Going to lead spec split cathode will add mids and sound a little smoother.

What's your tone stack? 56k/250pF? If so, switching to 33k/500pF will add upper-mids and gain.

Thanks. Tone stack is 33k/500pF. I have tried both a few times and seem to like shared cathode better.

Any response to this part of mrkrausman's question?

Well I re-installed a split/shared cathode switch like I had in the past. Right now I can say that I like the smoothness of split cathode sound. It also seems to be middier and less boomy. I think I have a good foundation to work from now.
