50-watter with Master Volume?

Hi all!

I am considering having George build a 50-watt head with a master volume. It would also have a low volume and a high volume. A Plexi/JMP switch is also under serious consideration.

Do any of you have a MetroAmp 50-watt head with this setup? If so, how do you like it? How well does the master volume work?

Cool, then you don't need the big print for my sake.

What did you mean by a separate high and low volume, like the Mojave Coyote with a volume for the high frequencies and a volume for the low frequencies?

I don't know if it helps, but I have built a fair number of 50W MV amps based on the 2204 circuit but with various changes and they sound fab! I've used mostly George's parts and sozo caps, plexi-style trannies etc and always gotten a great sound. With a few tweaks the 2204 style circuit can sound amazing.

Could you post some details ? I have 2104 2 X 12" combo I want to tweak..

Well particularly for combos I like to change the PS caps from .022 to .1uF. Common mod. My theory is that they originally changed from .1 to .022 when they started using closed back cabs. I like the older value for the extra low-end oomph which helps a lot with open backed cabs.

The usual things like no bright cap on the vol pot, sometimes leaving out the bright cap on the mixers - although sometimes you do need it.

I also like to experiment with the cathodes on V1. I find that the .68/2K7 on the second cathode is a pretty important part of the Marshall sound, but I like to try bypass caps on the other triode with various resistor values.

The other thing I sometimes do is vary the value of the cap/resistor combo on the gain knob. I just changed my latest from 500pF to 250 with a 470K. Seemed to help with SC pickups.

So nothing very radical, just common sense mods. HTH!

I use a 72 spec 1987 with one of Georges PPIMVs - could not be happier (although Rockstah is quite persuasive with a slightly modified version by Fischer

Not tried it yet). It makes the amp very useable for gigs, rehearsals and home practice, I have recently found myself in a funk band too - I even use it for that with my strat (ok a bit embarrassing to admit but they are really good musicians

). I do run Mullard xf2s and Mullard pre.s which might help.

Sounds great with 4x12 (not so good with 2x12 but my 2x12 is not very good!!!).

When I have another 50watter up and running will try the other MV and report back but cannot bear to be without it so judge for yourself
