Mark, aside from the authentic layout and dual power option, am I correct in thinking that tone wise I can get the 100 plexi kit, and all I have to do is change a couple values on the board and the big caps on top of the chasis and it will sound like a 12 series? My only concern is tone.rockstah wrote:the 100w kit - u can get most any sound out of it. easiest to build. unless you want the amp to look authentic then get the 68 bare bones kit 12 series. unless you lean more towards the acdc sound and then it would be a jtm kit.
i say 100w kit all the way!
Mark
Thanks

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see the 12 series kit listed in the store. Also, does anyone know if the 12 series works well with power scaling? I live in a townhouse, and I won't possibly be able to crank the amp.rockstah wrote:the 100w kit - u can get most any sound out of it. easiest to build. unless you want the amp to look authentic then get the 68 bare bones kit 12 series. unless you lean more towards the acdc sound and then it would be a jtm kit.

Go to the amp kits section of the store and click on the barebones '67/'68 kit -- the complete kit is an option under that listing.MattPete wrote:Maybe I missed it, but I don't see the 12 series kit listed in the store. No reason power scaling won't work with this amp, but it will be a crowded house in there!!!

Some argue the caps under the board and the laydown PT contribute to the tone of those amps, but I doubt it. I think you could do a '67 or 12xxx with the caps on top and it would sound great. In fact, I think Bainzy had his spec'd out that way.planetjimi wrote:am I correct in thinking that tone wise I can get the 100 plexi kit, and all I have to do is change a couple values on the board and the big caps on top of the chasis and it will sound like a 12 series? After doing one metal panel and finishing up my 12xxx, I find the layout with the caps on top and upright PT much easier. You have a lot more room to work with.

if youre only concern is tone - then the 100w kit with the correct values and components will give you the tone you seek.planetjimi wrote:Mark, aside from the authentic layout and dual power option, am I correct in thinking that tone wise I can get the 100 plexi kit, and all I have to do is change a couple values on the board and the big caps on top of the chasis and it will sound like a 12 series? lower filtering/ higher filtering and a few caps and resistors really.MattPete wrote:So what components differ?rockstah wrote: if youre only concern is tone - then the 100w kit with the correct values and components will give you the tone you seek.
Also, is the layout of the 100w kit roomier than the 12xxx, so that there is more room for modding?
the way i see the 100w kit, with all caps on top, is it is an easier build and easier as far as switching out filtering values/differnet specs.
with the caps on top chassis (100w kit) there is plenty of room to modify but really there is plenty in either chassis style for basic modding.

Cool flynman! I'm starting to put mine together this morning. I'll be taking lots of pics as I go. If you have any questions I should be a couple days ahead of you.Flynman wrote:Pulled the trigger on the 100 watt kit Rockstah helped me out with some changes with caps and transformers. Just need to get some soldering supplies and I'll be set to go maybe by Tues.!!!!!
Thanks
