always sounds great herb, same spec?

a bit off topic, but I have a new project. a 59 flame top LP. its looking good so far.

I call it the may 2016 spec. I was playing it yesterday on the clean channel with a strat. It sounded pretty awesome. I would have to say its my favorite spec. With the way I have my clean channel wired up( independent gain pot and a second volume in series only when the clean is activated) it is a very versatile amp. The clean goes from super clean and twangy with a strat and gets a very nice cruch with the gain up and a lp. I imagine a great Jimmy h tone is in there, but I cant do it justice unfortunately lol.

Because I'm OCD (like the rest of you!) I've been thinking about valves again (or 'tubes' for the non-brits).

#36 could have had EL34s or 6550s from the factory. I've used both...and KT88's actually. I've been using Shuguang EL34A for a while and really like them. I'm curious to try something that sounds as close as possible to the famous GE 6550A though. My understanding is that this particular 6550 variant could handle 42W dissipation rather than a conventional 30 or 35W (?) 6550. For this reason some folks like to use KT88's instead (42W).

I did a bit of Googling and found that TAD and Valve Art (and probably others) now produce a 6550A with 42W rating, and of course claim they are very similar in tone etc to the 'famous' GE 6550A used in Marshalls in the 70's...

...does anyone have any experience with these higher rated 6550's? I've only used Winged C's and cheap Chinese 6550's before myself.

I've tried original GE 6550As and sold them to an organist. These sound too hard and cold for a guitar amps IMHO, with the possible exception of some metal stuff

There's nothing like GE6550As really. but don't worry too much about these for guitar. I'd rather try tung-sol style 6550s or even 6ca7s

We have run a set of original winged c 6550s in a hot-rodded 71 superbass for a year now (average 3 hours a day) and it still sounds very good.

Thank you both for your replies. I guess from an electrical standpoint, KT88's and 6550A's are similar (?) but I think KT88's are 'known' to have a nicer midrange response (like EL34s)? or is this more to do with deifferences of manufacturer/brand rather than difference in tube type (6550 vs 6550A vs KT88 vs EL34) etc..

I've increased the phase inverter cathode resistor to 680R and put in a JJ ecc803s. Also using jj ecc83mg's in the rest of the pre-amp. Back to a 470n presence cap too.

This sounds extremely close to the original #36 and is probably the best sounding recording ever posted here. Someone needs to get their hand on this amps and at least port a gut shot!

There are some decent tones. Sounds a bit muffled and compressed though. It's missing some high end bite and clarity.
