one of the key factors in this amp is getting the power section moving, i have a feeling that's why the cranked plexi with el34's sounds so good. theres not as much high ear piercing gain as you would think there is.

Both dukeamps and herbvis clips are pretty great.

So lately I've been on a mission to cut bass out of my amp while still retaining tone. I've now ended up with quite a change to my spec. Lowering the presence cap back to 0.1u helped a lot. Lowering the 4th stage cathode bypass to 0.47u also helped clear up some thickness. I also bumped up the 3rd stage cathode bypass to maintain some tonal balance. The tone still didn't seem quite right and lacked some mids, so it got me thinking about using a 1959 style 1st stage output rather than 2203.

Rather than rewiring everything, I thought I'd get pretty close bumping the peaker up to 4n7 and lowering the bright cap to 470p. This got pretty close, but still not quite right. So I thought about how the 1-wire mod would be done and try to emulate that.

So I reconfigured the 1st stage output to 1959 style (e.g. 2n2 coupling cap, 4n7 bright cap) and then kept the mixing circuit as part of the 1st stage output rather than leaving it at the cathode follower input. This worked really nice after tweaking the value of the resistor to ground to get the gain right.

So my first stage is now:
1k8//1u
2n2 coupling
4n7 bright
470k//470p peaker with 330k to ground

I still want to try some different 4n7 caps before posting some clips, which should hopefully be on the weekend.

OK, so I ended up using the standard 2k7/0.68u 1st stage cathode and had to adjust the 2nd stage cathode to get some clarity back.

Hey guys,

After ripping the AFD ish mod a year ago, I've come full circle back to it again. I have tried everything under the sun Including my own circuit that was bits of this and bits of that. Now I'm looking for that AFD tone again but with less top end. Herbvis, your last clip sounded spot on ! What did you have going on there ?

FWIW, my last AFD mid looked like this.

2k7//0.68
100k//500pf
2n2
470k//470p/150k
10k//0.1u
22n
470k/220k
10k
22n
470k//470p/470k
820r

It sounded very good.

BTW typing on iPad, so plz mind the mess. lol

Yeah, I prefer the reverb too. It makes it sound closer to the album.

I can't give away too much, but the 2nd and 3rd stage cathode resistors are less than 10k. The 10k compresses too much with a 2k7 1st stage.

Hey mate,

What's with the secrecy ? Are you starting an amp company ?
