25 Watt #34 2204 Clone

Post by gldtp99 » Wed Sep 29, 2010 8:47 am

I just did #34 mods to a 25 watt 2204 clone i built some time ago--- Heyboer 18 watt PT/OT, 4H/90mA choke, ss rec, JJ 6V6S x 2, typical near-stock 2204 preamp.
I also added a Lar/Mar PPIMV that replaced a variable NFB pot (which was of limited use).
This amp came ALIVE !!! 8) --- even with an "initial test" preamp tube set (Sovteks and a JJ) this one is producing tone similar to clips i've heard of higher wattage versions---- it doesn't have the chest thump of a 100 watter, of course, but it's a lot of fun to play.
Some differences in this amp are .015uF coupling caps on V1A&B---- V1 plate load resistors are 82k--- and the treble peaking and bright caps are removed---- the 470k/470k voltage divider is now 330k (series)/470k (ground)---- these changes were already in the amp before i did the #34 mods, no real reason to change now considering how the amp sounds.
I built a quick 50 watt turret board version of the four preamp tube AFD-type amp out of a gutted Laney AOR 50----- it also works well---i'll have to A/B these two after i get a better preamp tube set in the 25 watt #34 and do any tweaks as needed----now it's bright, a little naselly, and has great controllable feedback. And Big Balls for a 25 watter.
Just got a new pre-punched steel JCM 800 2204-type chassis in from Watts---i wanted the aluminum blank JCM 800 chassis but they sent this one by mistake---- it's such a well-made chassis that i'll keep it and order another blank aluminum chassis for the build i was planning for it (150 watt channel switcher)------ the pre-punched steel chassis would make a great base to build a KT88x2 #34 into.
Would a #34-type amp with only two big bottles be a #17 ? If so, my 25 watter would be a #8.5................gldtp99

Made a few changes--- changed PI/Output coupling caps from .022 to .047---- changed Gain pot to 250kA from 1MA--- restored voltage divider to stock 470k/470k (470pF bypass).
Tested amp and removed 470pF bypass cap. better without this cap.
Tried many preamp tubes--- ended up with blackburn mullard ecc83 in V1, GE 12ax7 in V2 and V3.
Testing thru Hiwatt (Sterling) 4x12 loaded with G12T-75's----was running thru a 2x12 last night.
No more changes needed--- this is a very good sounding amp---- it amazes me how much tone/sound/impact this amp gets out of a pair of 6V6's (JJ's) and Heyboer 18 watt iron.
Frank Levi hit it right with this mod---- no wonder Slash still has the orig #34 all these years later.
I've got a Marshall 4010 50 watt JCM 800 1x12 combo that i got cheap on ebay a few yrs ago--- had been poorly modded----i restored it to stock/near stock config but this one was nothing to write home about---- tried many different speakers, etc, etc then put it into storage until i figured out what to do with it----i'll do #34 mods to this amp soon- 8) ...............gldtp99

Info on this #34 mod is in the other thread concerning modding a JCM 800 to #34 specs: http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=33031

If i just lay out exactly what the mod is i'm certain to become extremely unpopular around here----- even if enough info is out there to figure it out------ it's just three parts and quite easy to do--- it has nothing to do with the non-stock changes in my 25 watter or the 250kA Gain pot, although these changes do help in this particular amp----satisfying hard rock tone without mushiness (stays articulate even at extreme levels)---- and with the Lar/Mar PPIMV it delivers similar tone at greatly reduced vol levels, if wanted..................gldtp99

Just returned from my shop where i finished up a restore job on a friend's '65 Fender Princeton Reverb----after testing the Fender out thoroughly i plugged into the 25 watt #34 head to see if i still felt the same way about the sound.
It kicks butt !!! i did more single note playing on the neck pickup than before and this amp delivers !!! Sometimes i get excited about a new build or mod and love it at first but feel differently after a few days and further testing----not in this case, it seems to be the real thing.
i still need to A/B it against my 50 watt #39-type head ----- it's hard to get free time to spend on amps lately---- my 'real' job is demanding almost all my time.
Plans to mod my Marshall 4010 50 watt JCM 800 1x12 combo to #34 specs are still in place......when i get time............gldtp99

Got the #34 mod to my Marshall 4010 combo installed/tweaked------ most important part in this one was moving NFB supply to 16 ohm tap from 4 ohm tap (factory stock in a 4010)----amp is sounding very good now during bench testing thru a 4x12 cab. I'll test different brands of EL34's and preamp tubes as i go foreward with this one. Then comes selecting the speaker for the 1x12 cab.
I A/B/C'd this 4010 against the #34 25 watter and the 50 watt #39-type (four preamp tube) head i did earlier----all amps sounded very good---- hard to tell which is my favorite--- :what: Another player was over and witnessed all this and he liked the two 50 watters the best---- but he listened only because he didn't bring a righthanded guitar to play---- i'm a lefty and i offered him any of my guitars to play, but he declined.
I've contacted a very talented player to come and record demos of two of these Slash-type amps in the studio across the hall from my workshop (his two favorites out of these three amps)---we'll do this over Thanksgiving break and i'll post the clips then.....................gldtp99
