I got a Marshall Lead 12.I beleive is an older model as it has no headphone/line out jack by the switch.Any one know what the differances were I see there are three kinds. One without HP/Line out, One with and one with two jacks by the power switch.
I notice mine has a G10-20 Celestion were as the Lineout models on ebay have G10D-25 speakers.
Is there any circuit/tone differances between the models? Which did Billy Gibbons use?

Supposedly the very earliest (like the one you have) are tonally superior, according to some, but I've never tried them side by side.
With regards to speakers, I highly recommend you look for a G10-35L. ;)

I'll look into that speaker.Allthough I gotta say even with the G10-20.This amp with my Amr. Strat and an SD-1 is quite impressive little amp.

I have an early Bass 12 with the 35 speaker cranked it sounds pretty good, a little cleaner then the lead I suspect so I add a tube screamer.. Sounds awesome

Resurrecting an old thread here...

I bought a reverb 12 recently and replaced all the pots and electro caps to give it a new lease of life. I also replaced the opamp in the reverb sectin with NE5332 and the opamp used for the preamp with an RC4558.

I have also read that the earliest lead 12's were different and found a video on YouTube of one cranked. It clearly has a lot more distortion on tap!

On another forum someone states that these early model had a pair of diodes for extra clipping in the preamp. I've been testing this myself at the output of the opamp and also in the feedback loop of the second half of the opamp. I much prefer the latter but in both cases it results in a huge loss in volume; I have to have all knobs on 10 just to play bedroom level...

Anyone have much experience with opamp circuits and diode clipping? I'd love to know what the circuit of those early lead 12s looked like; the schematics I have in my Marshall book are of the later lead 12 and reverb 12.
