I've narrowed down what I'm looking for to either a JTM45 with mods to tighten up the low end, a JTM50 (probably with the same mods), or a 1986.
I don't know how to mod an amp so I'd need to get it done by a shop. Does it make more sense to just go for a 1986 from the start?
I know that a 1987 will have tighter bass than any of these but I prefer the sound of the bass circuit.
For clear, tight bass: JTM45, JTM50, or 1986?

Go for the 1986 and drop the V1 cathode bypass cap to below 10uF as a starter.
Use tight speakers (G12H or V30s, or similar) too.
My early JTM45s with 20H choke and GEC KT66s don't flub out but they are unusual!
