Beautiful tones man. Can it get any better than this....ahhh....NO! :D

Dan, great playing. I really hear the tone here...that nice robust mid burnished tone that we love about old Marshalls.

This is the best true old Marshall tone I've heard on this forum these past few years.

Man, really inspiring! Thanks for posting this.

The only thing at CDuniverse I could find with crossroads was the RAH farewell show so your probably right. I was just thinking if it was the Fillmore thats one more example of the awesome toen that that room gets on tape.

Some cheapo mic I have. The only decnet mic I have anymore is a 57 and I dont even have it. Its on permanent loan with a friend. I dont use it for anything important so what the hell.

Regardless, you copped the tone and feel quite nicely. I actually dig it with more gain.

Oh, and a question if I may:

Do you think that having four H55s has an overwhelming amount of low end like Jim describes?? I've been considering some of these, but am a bit reluctant to mix speakers. I would probably consider mixing these with 75s though.

Ive never felt like the bass was overwhelming. I guess it depends on the person. Ive heard nothing but good stuff from the 55/75 mixers. I went with the G12H30 55s because it was described to me as the speaker a strat or ACDC person would want. That sounded good to me on both counts and Ive been happy with.

I am curious what cab/speakers Clapton wouldve used at the time.

sounds killer. EC can be seen both with the 100 cabs and the 75w cabs. I cannot remember seeing him with bass logo cabs.

Shakti just gave me a heads up. He said Clapton has said he plugged into the normal channel of the 45/100 and has the treble and presence up. Ill have to try that too.

Yeah, that's what I've read and seen in plenty of photos.

I'd say it's not certain whether he used a 45/100 or a later EL34 100-watter for the Crossroads recording, which is March '68. But you're close with these clips anyway.

Personally, I hear more G12M sounds in Clapton's recordings, but I may well be mistaken, and certainly some of the later recordings are probably G12Hs. The WoF Crossroads is hard to tell, once you record live in a large hall (Winterland, IIRC) in a band setting, making out the little details gets hard.

If you don't have a mixer bright cap, I'd turn the treble down a little to simulate the normal input. I'd also introduce a little bit of bass. Presence seems fine, but I'd experiment with lower treble/higher presence.

And of course, a lot of the oooomph of the original recording comes from really pushing the speakers and getting that nice compression on only the peaks and in the bass.

But you're definitely in the right ballpark, and playing is top notch! I like what I hear from those Darkburst PUs too. I'm contemplating a pair in my (darkburst) LP, I currently have a Fillmore neck/Goodwood bridge combo which is just a little too hot for me.

I saw in your build journal photos that you do have a mixer bright cap, so definitely try the normal input. Be prepared to turn up the presence a bit though.

Any Marshall on the bright input with treble on 10 and bass on 0 and presence on 4 will sound a little too aggressive, particularly with G12Hs.

Sounds really good!

What I like about that 'Crossroads Tone' by Clapton is how the notes seems to 'bloom' after the attack or that 'nice compression' as stated above by shakti. It's really a thick, horn-like tone.

this board never ceases to amaze me how it is the perfect mix of amp cork sniffing and good playing with a little hero worship thrown in for spice.

i'm downloading it now so i can cop every lick! then i'll have to change my 2203 back to a JTM spec to get the sweet yet aggressive grind.
