Re: T tops vs Throbak pickups comparison
Don't mean to beat this into the dirt. But I thought the raw DI clips (not re-amped) might be of interest.
Here are the clips as they were recorded through the DI, into the computer. Feel free to reamp them or run them through amp sim software.
Split into two clips due to the 10Mb limit on Soundclick.

Re: T tops vs Throbak pickups comparison
i'm assuming the t-tops are used in the first clip, and the TB in the second
in la grange, the t-tops blew the tb out of the water
in hells bells, the tb were crisper, back lacked bottom
of course, JMO, YMMV

that's a very good idea to compare those pu's George but that's a pitty you couldn't record with amps and not DI.
i don't like the tone of a guitar through a DI , it takes away all the nice harmonics and makes it more HIFI.
also, even if you reamp it , you can't create what 's not there at first (although it's better than with just a DI obviously but not as good as directly in the amp) .
i'd be curious to hear them through one of your jtm 45 clones , through a 4x12 loaded with original g12h30 greenback / 102 003 .
i suppose they must sound good from what you seem to say.
i'd be curious to hear them and compare with my late 60's T-tops.
i don't seem to have the same problems as you have with the T-tops in my 97' les paul 59' ri and SG61' ri's or 69 SG standard, or at least , for me it's not a problem.
obviously the tone i have on the les paul 59' ri neck is louder than with the sg's as the pu is closer to the strings and with most pu's i used i have to lower the neck volume pot when my amps are pushed into overdrive to play rhthm patterns , when i use the les paul neck pu and the SG volume pot (a bit less) .
the neck pu beeing bass heavy, obviously it's more difficult to use it for chords when overdriving the amp but it sounds normal to me.
i think any neck pu is not the best for rhythm, even on a strat or tele, unless you play clean, without overdrive or just a bit; it's just too bassy and lacks bite anyway (many rhythm guitar players don't even have a neck pu, like Malcolm).
the neck pu's are great for solos in the upper register (see how hendrix is often changing is pu's switch in some songs but strats have more bite than les paul's ) or to play clean or semi crunch rhythms but i don't think they are really made for ovedriven rhythm pattern.
i like to play on the neck pu of my les paul or SG for solos past the 12th fret ( and for the woman tone as well ) .

Re: T tops vs Throbak pickups comparison
Re'amped the same old clips through my 5F6-A '59 Bassman. Same format T tops first, then Throbaks.
Mics this time were Sennheiser 409 up close and Royer R-122 a out a foot back.

Re: T tops vs Throbak pickups comparison
so, what 's the tone difference between the DT-102 and LSE-101 LE ( for the clarity / brightness , warmth , quack , honk ...) ?
are they brighter sounding , mellower or equivalent to a T-Top or Fralin 7,5/8k humbuckers ?

I'm not sure. I can only reference what is says on the website. I am on the list for the 101's so I should be able to compare them in a couple months.

Re: T tops vs Throbak pickups comparison
I have PG102s and am waiting for SLE101 Plus, so I'll be able to say something about that when they arrive. Judging by the soundclips I've heard, and compared with Jon Gundry's own descriptions and my own findings with the PG102s (which have the same winder configuration as the DT102s, only hotter and different neck magnet), I'd say prolly...
DT102/PG102: more honk, ever so slightly darker than their SLE counterparts, more "interesting" tone at the expense of openness (but not clarity).
SLE101/SLE101+: a little brighter, more sting and chirp, less honk, more open.
Take that with several grains of salt, though. I want to try them all, eventually!
