Ok, so now that the invasive surgery is over I've gone upstairs, dragged out a 61 SG Reissue, my Gibson Super Goldtone GA-30RVH (quad el84, dual channel w/6db boost per channel via footswitch), and various speakers to record in my Grendel Dead Room.
So I grabbed the AC/DC Back in Black backing track I found online and started recording. Tell me what you think. I've missed notes all over the place so I'll just admit that up front, OK? I'm going to go through one speaker at a time and record them, and post the links here.

They all sound great! I think I like the M75 or Scumnico clips the most, but they all have their good sides.

XH75 sounds most like BIB to me, then the M75 - it's the authority and crunch on the low E that decides it for me.
The first two are not right for this stuff, way too polite and not enough bass grunt.

That's what my ears tell me:
1. Scumnico's
2. H75's
3. XH75's
4. M75's
At first I wanna say that I still consider AC/DC a hard rocking blues or R'R band with their roots in the 50's until 70's, so that's the character of music I'm thinking of when it comes to them, more than the heavy rock or even metal stadion rock aspects connotated to them from the 80's onwards.
I'll start from the end, and as you're probably interested in some real opinions, I allow myself to be a little critical here. Besides that I absolutely appreciate your whole work and I'm quite sure that all of your speakers come with an extra amount of passion - and quality.
Now, I'm not a G12M guy at all, there's always some bass and treble lacking. I like to hear some more percussiveness and dynamics and the M's don't cover the neccesary freq range to do that IMHO. That's what I hear here too.
The XH75's sound great, but they seem to be more happy to deliver some harder stuff. Great bass response, tight sound overall.
With the H75's the track really comes alive, a perfect match between the character of the song and the speakers. What I hear too is that you're not hitting the strings very hard and I'm sure that the H75's would sound even better if you'd do so. That's the percussiveness I am thinking about.
The Scumnicos are the ones I like best, they almost grab my attention so much that I forget to listen analytically. Now I know that Alnicos in general don't have the bass response of a ceramic H30, but still they are my favourites here, because of their special tone and feel. Maybe a different story when you're not listening through small speakers, but all I can say here is that - listening to this clip - I'd be ready to accept a looser bass response with alnicos for the benefit of their overall sound and leave the bass punch to some good Presicion bass player.
Thanks for these clips Jim. I think I made the right choice to move from some M's to these Pre-/Rola H's in my quad cab and I'm really looking forward to build my 2x12 cab with Alnico's now....ahm...not with Scummies but with the TT's I bought relatively cheap a few months ago.
Maybe I should smoke the TT cones and order some Scummies...
Just joking - these times are long gone.
Edit: I hooked it up to my stereo - with the same results. The H75's seem to have the most authentical sound - who'd have thought that
- and the XH75's are great too, but different. I'd still go for the H75's or the Scumnicos. I wonder how the Scumnicos would sound like if you hit the strings with a really hard attack.
