Screwing around with with my new (old) LP... downloaded a backing track and threw this down... Metro JTM45/100 straight in to Metro B Cab... attenuated using a Hot Plate at (-4db).. . Mic is a Cascade Fathead... No EQ, no effects... straight in... any insights as to how to make it sound better are welcomed!

Thanks Mark! I tried it with an SM57 at first and just couldn't get the sound I was after... The Cascade Fathead made a HUGE difference... I am really pleased with them

I never get the sound I want with the SM57 -- at least with the time I have to record a clip. I throw the Fathead or Oktava up in front of the cab and get nice results every time, with no hassles.

when we were talking to Zakk @ the amp show, he said he uses one SM57 mic'd against a Marshall loaded w/G12T75's... he must have to eq the sh*t out of it??? If I did that it would sound ice-picky, brittle and harsh I have tried just about every possible place to put the SM57 and just can't find the spot....

Sounds reaally good. You might want to try warming up the bias on the right hand (the one that plays the lead) guitar's amp a bit.

Sweet! Sounds really good! The Cascade Fathead seems like a real nice mic. I also have trouble getting the sound that I want with SM57. Gutpile, how did you position the mic in front the speakers/cab?

You're playing the whole tune on the bridge pickup, right? I always thought that was what Kossoff did but people over at the PP Forum are saying:

On the FM longer version, there are 2 guitars. One on bridge pickup and one on the middle setting. They're doing different inversions of the chords. Solo is obviously neck PU

Thanks! The Fathead was humping the bottom left speaker, slightly off center and straight on... also, I turn the mic around (two sided mic but I think the back sounds better than the front - difference is very subtle).. I played the bridge up until the solo and then switched it to the middle position and rolled off slightly on the neck volume... two takes (left and right speaker), some panning and done! I accidently cut it off at the end The left speaker amp volume setting is at about 6.5 and the right is at about 8.0... Thanks for listening!

Hey Gut, how close are you sticking the Fathead to the grille cloth? I'm still a little nervous about blowing the guts putting it too close!!

Thanks for your reply. You really got me interested in the Fathead.

BTW, I just listened to the different live versions of All Right Now on the Free Forever DVD and on everyone of them, Kossoff seems to stay on the bridge pickup all through the song. But maybe that's not what he did in the studio...

Haven't moved it yet... I guess I really never worried about because I saw the demo for them at NAMM and it showed them set right up against the grill cloth... Unless I had a "Back to the Future" cab, I think I should be OK?

Cool, I've been using mine more for distance but I'll go ahead and shove her up there next time and see what I think. Stuff the Oktava MK319 up on the speaker next to it and I should be sounding killer.

I tried the distance approach and found them to be a little on the low end of the EQ spectrum. I'll have to look into the Oktava, I am not too familiar? How does it compare to the Fathead? I'd be curious to hear a comparison? (hint, hint! )

Hey very nice clip Gutpile. Great songchoice by the way (just so happens I love FREE). Great playing, accurate chords (lots of people play it wrong and dont change to A5 during the verse) too. And the tone, WHEW!! Very nice. If you had Ole Paul Rogers singin, Id think it was Free!

I like your sound! How loud did you set the volume on the amp?
