JTM45/100 home build with Strat: Pickup Compare

Post by Gamedojo » Tue Jun 08, 2010 4:38 pm

Hey there!

Finished my JTM45/100 build (not exactly a metro amp though...) and did these two quick clips to help me decide which pickups works best with this amp in my Strat's Neck posistion:

Van Zandt
http://www.tylergrund.com/mp3/pickuptestA.mp3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Texas Special (modified by me)
http://www.tylergrund.com/mp3/pickuptestB.mp3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have the presence at 6 and after making these clips, I think I'll be turning it down to help a bit with the sharp sounds the amp is creating.

Great playing 8)
The Texas Special has without a doubt the best tone clarity and definition, very SRV sounding IMHO!
The Van Zandt is to muddy and harsh like a way overwound SC!
How did you modify the Texas Special?
What spec on the guitar Body wood weight/neck wood thickness?
Amazing sounding amp!
What speakers do you use, Celestion G12H30?
Have you tried the Suhr FL Fletcher/Landau pickups absolute KILLERS!

Thanks! Glad you dug it!

I took a used texas special and unwound it until it read a Ohm reading that I wanted.

Strat was a '71 Maple neck stock minus the pickups. I'm assuming that makes it an ASH strat. Not exactly sure.

Scumback M75 100watt speakers. Favorite 12" speaker I've ever used.

Haven't tried TOO many pickups. I see them like pedals. Nearly infinite options/choices that can drain a bank account! I'm trying these two pickups because I got both of them for under $40.

Good stuff man !

My ear likes the Van Zandt's for that style of music. (I use Evans pickups and a Super to get that flavor.)
I think the (modded) Texas Special's would best suit a slab board.

Thanks for the great clips, Tyler!

Btw., i very much fancy this Super Reverb clip of yours (especially the first part with master on 10): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQeudZPm ... re=related" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's one of my favorite Super Reverb clips that i've heard on the net - really gives a good impression what it should sound like. A super Reverb is the second amp i see for me in far future. Have you made a homebrew black face SR? Were you able to get the same tones out of it as from the modded silver face in that clip - it's pretty much what i hear when i imagine a SR.

Kind Regards,

VintageCharlie

Thanks!

I haven't made a homebrew since I already own a '67 super reverb. But I did apply my mods to someone else's super reverb clone amp with pretty good success. But the newer pots and tranformers make for a brighter amp. Since those silverface fenders are still so cheap, doesn't really make sense to build one anyways.
