Vintage TS9 and TS808 clips with JTM100 Homebuild

Post by Gamedojo » Wed Sep 29, 2010 1:48 pm

So I got myself a slew of vintage tubescreamers and I finally sat down today and ran through each.

• JTM45/100 Homebuilt Marshall
• '71 Strat
• Scumback M75 speakers

I pretty much set each the same with the gain at 9, tone nearly maxed and level maxed.

Amp was set to "beginning" to breakup.

(Warning: Lots of cranked SRV licks...)

1982 TS9 (really beat up w/JRC4558)

1983 TS9 (near mint w/JRC 4558)

1981 TS808 (RC4558 chip)

1980 TS808 (JRC4558 chip)

TS808 (analogman TV mod Reissue)

EDIT: Video Version added on Youtube:

THe recordings, to my surprise, really don't show much difference between them. But I could EASILY blind test each of them and tell a difference. I guess it has something to do with the timing of the attack and how/when it hit the amp..maybe? Dunno. But In person it was much more drastic.

Really nice sounds! I prefer the 1980 808 but all sound awesome. Nice playing too.

i think the 1980 was also my favorit, but for the most part it's quite close. Which one did you like best when trying them live?

is the analog man a reissue 808 that is modded? It doesn't sound bad, buit it has something going on less than the older ones - it seems more harsh and somewhat... less complex, if that makes sense - the older ones, especially 808's seem to have some harmonic firework stuff going on that the analog-man modded one *reissue 808?) seems to be missing. Or it was dialed in defferently - maybe i thad less gain or at the same setting what not?

oh, and i think my 2nd favorite after the 1980 is the 82 TS9

you use a 2x12, not a 4x12, right?

Thanks for posting agai nsome clips of a 45/100 - i have to wait till i'll have the time to put mine together at last... so this eases the pain of the wait :D

Yes, the analogman 808 is his "TV" mod or "True Vintage" its his take on getting a reissue 808 to sound exactly like a vintage one. As you noticed, its still not quite there. THere is definitely a stiffness to the reissue. A sort of lack of dynamics I suppose.

My favorite is a toss-up between the '80 TS808 and '82 TS9. Both are fantastic live, but the TS9 has more bite and snarl, while the 808 has a rounder more solid sound... hard to describe. The coolest part is everyone in a different forums are right in line with my thinking. The '81 and '83 and analogman screamers are, for some reason, not as good sounding...

I am using a 4x12 now with the scumbacks. More professional live since I can get the speakers to point at my head to dial the sound in properly. As my bassplayer says "You dont have ears in the back of your legs"...ha!
