18w plexi (2203 preamp)

Post by menthal » Sat Oct 09, 2010 5:18 am

I made a small 18w plexi(channels in series like the 2203 preamp). It's only three gain-stages though, I removed the cathode follower.

Recorded with a SM57 and Vintage 30's.
http://www.netmusicians.org/files/2-18watt.mp3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (recorded with an attenuator).
http://www.netmusicians.org/files/77-18watt-noaut.mp3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (beefier filter caps and bass not at max)

The bass is a bit flubby, but other than that I think it sounds ok.
Next time I'll not max the bass dial. :)

I like it. Sounds good.

What guitar/pups you using on the first attenuated clip?
Metroamp 12000
EVH 4X12 + Marshall 1960AX 6402
Gibson Les Paul
VH RWB Strat in Progress

Cool.
The guitar is a Les Paul clone(made of alder) and the pickups are a combo of Duncan '59/Distortion.

It almost sounds like a single coil sound as you move up the board. Is the pickup tapped?

Is the neck pup a distortion or 59? sounds good on the highs, like you said a little flabby on the bass. If you can sort out the lower end = lovely sound amp all round, including wattage.

Neck pup is a '59.
Yeah it's a cool little amp, gonna add a choke and beef up the filter caps, that should tighten the bass.

Hi Menthal,

How is your progress with this build coming along? I decided to build this based on your schematic that you had posted on another site. Not sure if you have made any updates which you would want to share. I am nearing completion and only have to wire the board in and decide if I am going SS rect or use an EZ81.

Thanks!
Rick

WOW! I think that sounds GREAT! A little gritty, but very MEATY. How much you got in to the build?
