Playing around with it last night it makes a lot of sense but I'm looking for a simplified, blues based version. I see the pentatonic box and the some of the overlapping shapes I use (actually partial shapes), relative minor, etc. I know (and can see ) there is more, just have to connect it all and then decide what notes aand phrases are the right ones to fit at the right time! (The EASY part, right guys? )

Here ya go: 5 position of pentatonic
Fingering 1 is position 1... Key of G

And here's the 2 diagonal pentatonic scales
One with a 2 on the bottom the other with a 3. That alternate.
Super easy to blend these with the up and down 5 positions

Super impose position one of the pentatonic scale in the previous post, over the top of the diagonal with 2 note on the low string and you can see how they overlap

If you drew both diagonal patterns on one image, you would see the 4 fret speads before and after every 2 or 3 grouping. ( like 3rd fret to 8th fret on 6th string which is position 1)

Between the 5 positions of Major, 5 positions of pentatonic, and diagonal pentaonics... you have a lot of ground covered. There are diagonal major scale too. I'll see if I can draw something up.

So, go back and watch that video I posted from Scott Henderson on pentatonics. If you have a song that is in, say G major, you can play Am, Bm, and Em pentatonic using the same 1st position fingering and get a whole bunch of different notes and sounds.

Look at this and you can see why:

Ionian.........(Maj) ............ 1234567
Dorian.........(min) ........... 2345671
Phrygian......(min) ........... 3456712
Lydian.........(Maj) ........... 4567123
Mixolydian....(Maj/Dom7) ... 5671234
Aeolian........(min) ........... 6712345
Locrian........(dim) ............7123456

G maj (Ionian): G, A, B, C, D, E, F#
A (Dorian): A, B, C, D, E, F#, G
B (Phrygian): B, C, D, E, F#, G, A
C (Lydian): C, D, E, F#, G, A, B
D (Mixolydian): D, E, F#, G, A, B, C
E (Aeolian): E, F#, G, A, B, C, D
F# (Locrian): F#, G, A, B, C, D, E

I pretty much have every mode down to where it's natural, but the least used for me would be Dorian, Locrian, and Phyrgian... Funny thing is we wouldn't call it Aolian, we would call the bridge in relative minor and playing off the 6..

RG: Those penatonic minor of bm, am in 1st postion form in Key of G are the common notes. Notice RG didn't say going to Bm or D maj scale

 Maybe a good Idea to continually post links to sites that are beneficial. Lessons, TAB's, vid.s whatever...
Here's another one : http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Posting a song with everyone's separate & different input may confuse things. How 'bout posting songs to dissect as a group ? This keep's everybody honest and down to earth so it does not become a potential Harmony-Central-Can-'O-Worm's disaster and meeting of the minds.

What artist/songs then?

So, are you suggesting taking a song and seeing what scales/modes can work with it. Or, taking a song and figuring out what the artist did in that song. I would argue that the former is potentially more informative.

Satriani: Flying in a Blue Dream

C Lydian is what folks say is the "key"...which is also G Major (G,A,B,C,D...Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixo)
So, as we saw in previous posts, we can use G Major scale, Am, Bm, Em Pentatonic scales, what makes it sound C Lydian is "hanging out" or focusing on the F# and C relationship and when you fall down the stairs, make sure you are landing on C to stay "in".

Right?!?!?!

Here is a 5 minute loop of the outro of FIABD as a backing track to play over.

Remember you are playing G Maj but emphasizing on the C. This should be very familiar to most because it shares an E minor Pentatonic (also the relative minor of G Major - the 1) so you can take your familiar (6) E minor jam licks, and use them as your new C Lydian licks, but the key is, as rgorke mentioned, to borrow the notes (for example) from our familiar E pentatonic, but landing on a note that brings the listener back in.
Think playing in G major, but focus on the (4) Lydian mode, and emphasizing on the C and the #4 (F#)
(If I was focusing on the Mixolydian I would be emphasizing on the b7)

Tuned down a 1/2 step.

That's cool. I gotta make some backing loops like that to practice over. That's the key. There is a vid on youtube where Steve Vai is looping his recorded rythm tracks on ProTools and figuring out what sounds best over top.

BTW, I finally got to play one of those new Ibanez JS2410's like in that vid. Last weekend. What a great feeling guitar! One of the best Floyd axe I've ever picked up. Great tone choices. Nice solid heavy Alder body. Great sustain.

Just plugged in and hit record...
I did have the G Major scale blown up on my monitor as I was noodling, referencing the fretboard helping with
instantaneous ideas for improv...
(I apologize to the Satch guys; I don't play any of his stuff :hide: )
