I built my amp over 10 years ago...

been reading with interest here on how to spec for the VH tone. I made some adjustments, and made a clip today.
Would be interested in feedback and any suggestions!

Sounded great man  . I'd say that it would be REAL nitpicking for me to give an adverse comment

tom, divulge the specs you ended up with please so we can nitpick it a bit closer ! I hear a bit more wiggle room in there we can get you further along. but first need to know where your at circuit wise.... I see the ancilliary gear/speakers/tubes/pickup etc.... and that may need to be tweeked, but depends on the circuit. a pic would suffice

also. I know people hate to hear this, and i'm totally against corksniffing in principle....... I don't see what tubes' you're using. I assume modern Chinese/Russian. but a vintage in v1 and v3 will help fill out the ''give' and fatten the tone a bit which is what I hear as lacking a touch. A tungrsram in 1 and 3/mallard in 1 and 3/or tlefunken in v3 will help. Can find them for 40-50. I'd also ditch the attenuator. they suck this give from the tone. also recommend throwing an original vintage greenback or a '74 RIC cone into the mix with your cab to put a mic on it....with that and the tubes we're in over 3-350 but it's worth it and the speaker will hold it's value and increase more than paying for the upgrades in a decade or so. no recreation speaker, when mic'd performs like the original's because of the paper pulp imo. the trees used to make the pulp/cone was a n original growth/slow grown tree which are gone forever.....if you resist this info and stay with the attenuator etc, which I understand in practical terms, you'll never get much closer, although a circuit mod or two can cheat it a little more towards 'the tone'. only the most hardcore can experience the real thing. I don't make these rules. it gets down to physics man and there are laws and rules at work that care not for our wives and wallets !

Thanks awangotango,

Really do appreciate your feedback. The circuit was originally a 1987 circuit. I did make some tweaks here and there i think, and recently bought some mustard caps as well...

I'll try to get some pics up of the guts for you to look at in the next couple of days. Would love to get you guys to help me dial this in.

I recently bought a Sennheiser e906 mic which I'm keen to do another recording with when I get some time. From the couple of test clips I've done with my other amps, this mic is great.

Anyhow, I'll get back to you with some photos soon.
As per the tubes... do you know of a good reputable place where I can buy? I'm worried about fake or new type of tubes that would not make a difference.

Cheers again... Tom

I can vouch for this guy as well

OPEN AND SWEET

MUSICAL DISTORTION

check out his 12ax7 section. He's got bunch of good stuff and fairly priced. Just based on that clip you put up, seems like you could use the RFT sound to fatten and juice things up a bit. one in V1 and the other in V3.
