Is this what a JCM-800 should sound like? I've been using pedals and higher gain sounds for so long, I can't tell anymore.

Re: Home built JCM-800...Sound Authentic?
Sounds like it to me. Tight sound, aggressive snarly mids, good bite, the classic Marshall sound.
Just rewired my plexi clone to a 2204 circuit myself. If you install a PPIMV, you'll get that sound and more... It will give you more liquid sustain, but still retain that sound.
One thing I find about a 2204, and it might be due to the cold clipping stage, is that it cleans up to this nice chimey sound, when you use a guitar with a treble bleed cap over the volume knob. I think it has something to do with the clipping threshold. Whatever it is, it's a great circuit. I'd really recommend trying a Lar-Mar PPIMV. You'll get higher gain, but it won't be like metal gain. It will be a good hard rock gain.
