Here's some fun I had with my real 67 and my replica. Basically the same rhythm part with my LP neck pickup and a lead line over top.

The settings on both amps are vol 1 10, treble 8, mid 10, bass 4, pres 5.
Into Powerbrake (it's late) down 3 clicks.
'70 slant cab with G12H's.

'57 on the grill into my Neve clone preamp kit. Studio Projects C1, 3 feet back into Mackie. Both into RME Multiface recorded into Logic. No EQ or FX.

The real 67 has all Mullards. The replica has Tung Sol RI pres and JJ E34L's.

Enjoy!

Hey George - Both sound clips sound really great. Both are really warm & woody sounding. I like them a lot. :D

The real 67 sounds like it has a flabbier bass. The bassy notes on the chords seem a little more loose compared to the replica. On the other hand the relic has more of a mid freq scoop to it. The mid scoop is probably due to the new production tubes.... my guess.

Personally, I kinda like the replica better. The replica sounds like its got a little more gain and bite to it. Maybe it's also because I'm so used to hearing new production tubes...

Does the relic have those Vintage Sozo caps in it??
If it is.. i really got to get some if them.

Great Clips!
Thanks for sharing them!

:D :D

Yep, new Sozo caps in the replica.

I've been waiting all week to find some time to try my new neve clone mic pre. Then when I finally did, I went and mixed that condenser mic and Mackie pre in with it....

Oh well.

The pre is really cool. Check out seventh circle audio if you're interested in building a mic pre. I ordered a second one.

I like the replica better too! LOL Just a bit tighter sounding. Of course no one would know the difference if you told them the replica was the real thing. Hell, I've never heard two Marshalls that sounded exactly the same.

Here's a pic of both amps.

Nice clips. The lead tones of the ยด67 reminded me a bit of Free.
Real nice sounds in the replica as well. That would cut well in a band.
But in a trio the darker original would be soo nice.

What would happen if you swapped the tubes ? Would be interesting to hear.

The only thing wrong with Georges builds: They are so clean.. :D

Maybe sloppier work, like the scatter wound pick-ups you can get, would be the last missing component.

The replica sounds a tiny bit grainier and grittier than the original, which was a little smoother and darker to my ears, mushy bass or not. But with those kinds of tube differences, it's not a fair comparison at all, IMO! The differences were definitely subtle, though..OTOH, with 3 steps of attenuation, all amps will exhibit some fizzies.

*Very* nice work regardless! What kind of OT does the original have, Drake or Dagnall? Straight-ahead JTM45 front end?

Both sound really great and show a very similar tonal character.......I'd agree with swapping the tubes so that both have the same set to be totally apples vs. apples.

But you're still holding out on us. The '66 vs. the '66 replica is your next sleep deprivation assignment!! And some pics dammit..........I need a nice reference to compare the tone of my '66 replica to, since to me it utterly rocks.......

Yeah, '66 tones, that's what we want!

Flames, do you have any photos of your '66 build? I am just ordering a JTM45 kit, would love to do a JTM45/100 next (well, if I get this one right...).

Ive been eyeing that up. You did the N72. Is it really good? Did you have to get the chassis with it?

I like the replica just a bit better myself. Just that extra bit of cut.
Great job, George!

I will try to make a clip with the Mullards in the repica. And a comparison of the '66s as well. It's tough because I put the cab in my bedroom and run cables through the house to my office where the computer is.
I thought about building an iso cab for a 4-12, but I really prefer to have a condenser mic about 3 feet back from the cab. That would make for an awfully large iso.

The N72 is very cool. Fun to build and sounds great. Same iron as in the Vintech Neve clones. I just bought one channel at first.
Now I ave ordered the chassis, power supply and a second N72.

How are you powereing the first one? The only thing that sucks is you really have to have the power supply and chassis along with it which makes the whole project $600 if you order it at the same time. I dont have that much home recording gear to justify that kinda preamp expense. Looks really cool if you have a nice setup already. Fill it with 2 of all the different ones they clone.

Old school. I got a box of these little power supplies years ago. I use them for everything.

One thing Tim did that was super cool, is refund the balance of the kit price when I ordered the other parts!
Hey, that guy from metroamp should do that too....

I can tell these are just like building amps. I'm already telling myself I "need" two of the API clones. And maybe a few Jensen clones. I'm hit.

Now, who makes an 1176 kit?
