I like his studio tones on the Dokken and Lynch Mob albums but I think his tone on the Dokken "Beast of the East" album is just plain muddy. Too much distortion really.

I agree, he was using too much stuff. George gets his best sounds when he's stripped down to a half stack and a few pedals. I loved Georges playing on "Tooth And Nail" and "Under Lock And Key" the best, cause to me, they(solo's) had all of the great ingredients, which include, tone, feel,structure and meody. George was able to throw in a little speed and technique without going overboard (which I feel he did on "Back For The Attack"). I really liked Dokken. Very catchy and melodic.
