I love Rory. Got Deuce, Live in Europe, Tattoo, Top Priority and Calling Card on vinyl, its the best way to listen to him.
Apparently, he's an artist that was huge and kinda faded from memory, talking to a couple guys I know who saw him way back in the mid 70's, all they said was "he deserved a bigger venue".
My two faves albums have gotta be Live in Europe, and Calling Card, my Live in Europe is wearing out so I have to scale back the listening.

Rory with AC30:

This is from the era when I saw Rory in London and it was at The Greyhound pub as it says on the comments, jarred my memory,

I remember how much I liked Rory in the earlier, less complicated days, and yes he was way ahead of his time featuring acoustic numbers, as no one else was doing that then, brilliant stuff!!

I've always thought Rory was great and I have to go along with Chief on that one - he was the real deal. I think Irish guitarists really have a lot of passion that they put into their playing. Gary Moore is like that too. Not to be judgmental but I'd rather listen to either one of those guys (preferably Rory) than someone like SRV. That's just me though...
Fuck it.

+1 Eargasm, Rory was a dying man by the time you saw him Geoff, Muddy Waters loved Rory and thought he was the real deal.
Irish guitarists are the best ever Rory surpasses SRV in my opinon as he worked so hard, and created so many unique contributions to the blues and killer guitar playing.
Rory was never a stack man, preferring combos.
By the way I read Rory's unique story in this book I purchased from Rick Derringer's web site, Chief you must have this one, I wanted it for many years and recently got it.

I know exactly what you mean, Yng. SRV had his signature set of riffs, and he really helped push the "second coming" of the electric blues we have today. He was great in a lot of ways.
But Rory just had this raw, "kicking up the dirt" sound and style...
I don't mean to sound racist, but Rory is one of only a handful of (and I mean 1 of 2 or 3) white men that can/could play REAL, gritty, homestyle blues...
Mmmmm...I can't find the right words to say it right...

Hmmm, Irish players the best, eh? Man, now I wish I was more than 1/4 Irsh. Maybe that's why a quarter of the time I play I have my moments!
Don't ahve that book, Dave. I will chase it dwon on your recommendation. I do have Gerry McAvoy's book which is a little to much about himself when it's titled "My life Rory" or some such thing. Good book for Rory fans, though.

That's cool to see that here as I've got Calling Card and Pat Travers' Crash and Burn on the way to me from Amazon. I bought Tattoo around 2 years ago and liked what I heard, but the few songs that I've heard off of Calling Card sold me on it and let me know that there was definitely more of Rory's material that was worth checking out.NY Chief wrote:

just found "rory gallagher-irish tour '74" on vinyl near mint!
just a very special double album for me because the first big rock show i saw was jethro tull-robin trower-todd rundgren and the very special rory gallagher opening the stadium show at arrowhead stadium in kansas city.
i can still see rory to this day on that huge stage, the jean jacket, the really worn strat and his feel for blues that escapes many other white boys.
anyhow for those of you that dont own this recording dont pass it up if you see it, i paid $15 for a near mint vinyl copy, its an excellent performance that was recorded very well to boot

don't forget Taste! There are an awful lot of Rory vids on youtube! One of them claims that his strat was the first one in Ireland! Did he use a rangemaster as well? As far as his "theatrics" go I'm not sure if I've ever seen someone who moves so naturally and excitingly as Rory. I've seen some great still pictures too! I admit that Page looked so cool with a Les Paul and also Ynwgie is incredible (at least in the older days--not sure about the plus size YM these days!) but Rory sure was exciting to watch!

Rory 'lived and breathed' his music and that intensity, is what differs him from a lot of other artists. Unfortunately, that commitment and mentality, albeit producing some of the finest playing and music that we have, burned out Rory and his personal life was less than satisfactory as a direct result of his passionate effort.
When I first heard Taste and Rory's first few solo albums, having listen to mucho Hendrix, Beck, ect., I was struck by the inventiveness of his playing, the bends, the pinch harmonics, his knowledge of the fretboard, the shadings and colors of his tones, these qualities for me, made Rory an instant must listen to.
A lot of times it became too intense, this happened to me after the death of Hendrix, for quite a few years after, I couldn't listen to his music and I actually stopped playing guitar for almost 10 years.
Every guitarist/vocalist/songwriter that I really have enjoyed, seems to have had some sort of life too short or tragedy intervening after this fierce commitment to their music, has destroyed them inside.
Ironically for Rory, who despised drugs, it was in fact prescription drugs, given to various reasons, some health related, that contributed to his demise.
In this internet supposedly more informed, Google nation, we think we know more about people, than we really do.
Musicians more so than other forms or artists, are attacked or judged for their personal lives, and I do think this is unfair, it shouldn't have to come with the territory, but it seems to and this contributes to the demise of 'self' that dedicated performers experience.
When Yngwie describes Hendrix as the "Jesus of rock guitar", he is so correct.
Jimi knew his life would be short and he couldn't record or jam too much, others couldn't keep up. He was driven to accomplish as much as he could, due to his time being short.
He shared with us, his love and experience of a world we may never have imagined on our own, and consequently advanced our music and playing styles, light years ahead.
Rory, through his dedication of purveying the essence and spirit of the true bluesmasters to us, undiluted, drank from the poison cup himself and that's why Muddy Waters said Rory was the real deal, Muddy knew and that is the greatest compliment Rory ever got.
Rory is truly one of Irelands great heroes, much as Phil Lynott was and he is greatly missed.
