Warren Demartini 1976 Marshall Superlead Stage Amp!!!!

Post by roylfuchs » Sun Feb 24, 2013 6:57 pm

I just got my hands on this amp. It's a 1976 Marshall Superlead 100 watter; supposedly used by Warren Demartini in the mid 80's. It has some crazy mods on it. It looks like someone added a D.I. out and converted to a JCM800. I'm not sure what the 4 added caps are near the power section. On the cabinet it reads W.D. Ratt - S.L. (see the Ratt sticker on the side that reads "Dancing Undercover Working Personnel"). It's very faint, but you can still read "Status Quo" on the top of the cabinet. Furthermore, the dude that sold me this amp also informed me that J. Mascis barrowed this amplifier from him. I'm not sure if any of this is real, but I'm posting some pics of the amp and it's inerds to get some helpful ideas as to what mods are in it and if anyone has some possible additional info on this amp. Enjoy!

That's awesome! Perhaps the caps near the power section are for additional filtering? It does look like someone fused the hot lead (which is awesome for you!) and added an additional peaker to the normal 470pf on the 2203 before the gain pot (more mids by peaking lower). Great find! Play some Lay it Down!

Yeah...as soon as I get some time I'm going to record this amp and post some clips. The guy that sold it to me said that Status Quo owned it first, than Ratt got it next. Than this guy bought it, lent it out to J. Mascis for a time, than he sold it to me. If this amp could talk, I bet it has some greasy stories to tell. I shit you not...this amp smells like weed bad! Everytime I handle it my fingers smell like the inside of a bong!!

Since a mod 5 is only a 2203 with a few altered values and a PPIMV, I would say that the mod 5 looks like this, not the other way around.

any clips of this amp yet? how would you characterize the tone? bright? dark? gain levels? How does it compare to a stock 2203 for instance?
