Doublechecking NOS and modern parts list for my JTM 45/100

Post by VintageCharlie » Thu Apr 22, 2010 8:20 pm

Dear forum members,

the following is a full parts list of all nos and modern parts for my upcoming 45/100 build. I'm still not sure about who'll put it together for me, but after some thought my best bet would be either a tech within US or my local tech in Latvia (mainly because of the cost involved in extra shipping to other countries, etc.)

Meanwhile i'm getting ready to order the parts from Metroamp store and so this is the best moment to check everything. Any suggestions and corrections are greatly appreciated (especially considering the size of this thing!)

I'm especially uncertain about the hardware - the bolts, screws and about the wires (the needed length and type for a 45/100) - i'm not sure if i have everything there. And the last thing i want, when opening the metro package at the other side of the pond, is screw myself because of some screws ;)

Upfront i'm not sure which choke to use - from Marstran or Metro, which fuses shall i get, i also have no clue if the Marstran trannies will fit the Metro chassis (and mounting bracket, which i presume fits the chassis) without much hassle? I've read that for alu chassis one has to go with amphenol sockets for best fit - is this true? And what i just couldn't find on the site was the following (according to the 100w kit manual these should also be needed for a 45/100):

5 1/2” Grommets
1 3/8” Grommet
8” 1/8” Shrink tubing
12 3” Cable Ties

I'm not sure if this is included in the bare bones kit.

Please let me know if you spot anything that could give the tech "compatibility" issues (fit-wise), if i have missed apart, especially the small things - wires, screws, nuts, etc. or if you have any advice on a wiser choice.
For now i have also listed some AB cc's in all values to have spares for the pihers, just in case. And if everything goes wrong with the NOS stuff, i also ordered the Marshall board component kit, which should cover any need for a modern component. I'll probably also order some parts of different values, like the electrolytics and cc's, just in case if something has to be tweaked.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help guys!

So here's the full list:

NOS COMPONENTS:

After an almost two months long obsessive hunt for the 66/67 era correct parts, i have gathered the following NOS stuff for the build.

Resistors:
Full set of piher 1/2w resistors (except 1x 15k, 1x 33k (for Dickinson spec amp))
3x 10k 2w AB cc’s
3x 8.2k 2w AB cc’s
(Also some iskras as spares in many values)

RS mica caps:
1x 47pF RS mica
1x 100pF RS mica (old arced RS logo)
1x 250pF RS mica (old arced RS logo)
1x 500pF RS mica (old arced RS logo)
1x 560pF RS mica (old arced RS logo)
(also substitutes from Lemco, SRC and RMC ceramics in these values)

Philips Mustards:
4x 0.10uF (66 date codes)
5x 0.022uF (66 date codes)

Other components:
32+32uF Erie filter cap
1x 250uF@25v Wima
4x 1k 5w RS grey dog bones (old arced RS logo)
1x Erie Duolectron 0.05uF snubber cap
1x Mullard BY100 diode

1x Belling Lee Fuse Holder

Some of these are still on the way, but, if they survive the volcano dust-clouds, should be soon with me.

Thanks to Alberto, Aleksei, Ampmaker, Banks amps, BigSmythe, BrianH, Claude, Dirty Decibels, Frenchie, John, Kevin, Marc, MyFoot, Neil, Retro Lab, S.Marshall, Sparky, Wrea for helping finding some of these hard to get parts! And thanks for standing my nagging about these parts and finding your time for this! And special thanks to Neil for his never ending patience with my dumb questions!

I have a lot of NOS stuff, including pihers, iskras, old micas in correct or close values, some RS electrolytics in values i can’t use for a 45/100 (including a supposedly fine working 50uF@350v) – all of which i would be willing to trade for a 15k 1/2w, 33k 1/2w piher and Hunts electrolytics in 8uF or 10uF @ 150v. Please PM me, if you have any of these parts and are after some other NOS stuff. After this build i will sell some of the spares to get them to people who’re after these (though i probably will keep some parts for one more build which might happen in the far future).

I will be home in two weeks and then i’ll post a picture of this lovely bunch :)

What's the cost of all the stuff you can get here? Just wondering if it makes more sense to order one from the plexireplica site...

If you mean assembled Metropoulos amps (from plexireplicas site) and particularly the 45/100 with the mustards and cc's, then there is of course a big difference in the price - but then again - the plexi replicas are assembled by George himself, they have a good warranty and it has, for example, the block end chassis, etc. - that you can't get anywhere else - so it's a more than a justified difference. I just don't have the funds for it and shipping, taxes, VAT to Europe would drive the price into astronomical heights. If i had the money i think i'd go with an amp built by George himself. But, on the other side, i have now the opportunity to put even more NOS original parts in the amp and get something very special, which hopefully will also turn out to be a fantastic amp. I can pm you about the approximate price of the modern parts for the build if you wish, but i'd say it's a bit more than for the 100w kits, not by much, actually. A set of original mustards in correct values can be had for about 150$ and a full set of AB cc's might be about 30$.

Thank you very much for taking your time for this Roe!
If everything goes well, i shouldn't need any of the modern components on the boards, except the rifas, as i have nos parts for that - i'm just ordering also the modern components, as they are cheap compared to the total of the order and they are supposed to be as a backup for the case something goes wrong with some of the nos goodies. There are also some values that shouldn't be needed, but it's because they come in a kit.
Thanks a lot for the recommendations too.
Oh, i'm only buying the full amp wire kit and the extra pink wire - i just listed all the wire colors and lengths that are included in the kit.

What do you say about the fancy metal case diodes? - is there any reason to choose the uf4007 over these too?

Thanks again!

the uf4007s will make for a quieter amp and reduce the need for a snubber cap (the .047 in this circuit). also, I think the uf4007s sound a tad better than n4007s
