How 'bout the "Ezy Rider" effects?
What effects are there in the beginning of "Ezy Rider"? I don't mean the very first sounds that you hear on the left and the right channels, but the "main theme" after that, which is heard in the middle and which is before the lead guitar comes. What effects is used on that "main riff"? I like the tone very much. I think it's very juicy.

it's hard to tell with the other two guitars in the way, but it sorta sounds like he's got the univibe in the chain but not modulating, or modulating at the lowest speed. i forget sometimes how polished and wonderful the posthumous releases sound. i would bet there's a lot of dry track reamping and layering happening here

That's what I think too, but I can't be sure, and that's why I'm asking if somebody knows better about Jimi's equipments. Thanks, spaceace76!spaceace76 wrote: but it sorta sounds like he's got the univibe in the chain but not modulating, or modulating at the lowest speed.
Pre- or post, doesn't matter, but someone has had a skill to make especially those 70's recordings sounding like out of this world. They still sound as fresh as in the middle of the seventies when I first listened to the albums "The Cry of Love" and "Crash Landing". I think I got high by listening those tunes back then.spaceace76 wrote: i forget sometimes how polished and wonderful the posthumous releases sound. i would bet there's a lot of dry track reamping and layering happening here

Yeah, sounds like some 'producer/engineer' type thing, that, sometimes leaves the artist (as well as the producer !) wondering/thinking "Man, that came off great !"
I do hear a slight Univibe. I think that track was rooted in the late '69/early (Jan. '70) BOG era. I think Hendrix and Kramer gave it some more layering and dub's at Electric Ladyland. I recall Kramer saying that on some of the stuff, 2 vibe's and 2 amps were used in stereo with different amounts blended, or something like that. I do hear a slight 'thickening' to some of the tone's.
It's got that great Marshall/strat thing going on, sorta clean, but mean.

On the cd "First Rays of the New Rising Sun" it says December 18th 1969, and then they did some parts or final mixing on the August 22nd 1970.Tone Slinger wrote: I think that track was rooted in the late '69/early (Jan. '70) BOG era.
Anyhow, it seems like the Univibe still is an important pedal for Jimi in 1970. Thanks, Tone Slinger!

As Great of an effect as the Uni-Vibe was/is, just imagine Hendrix with some of the EH or MXR stuff that was to come.
Hendrix really exploited what was available to him, problem was, not much was available.

There are 3 main guitars in Ezy Ryder. The rythym guitar which plays the opening octave figures and chord, is IMO straight guitar. Strat/ Marshall.
There are 2 lead guitars floating thu-out panned left and right. One on the left, in the beginning IMO is fuzz going thru a leslie.
The other sounds like fuzz into a univibe

The guitar I'm talking about starts at 0:07 and is heard in the middle. Then there comes some leads at 0:23 on the left and right, but the guitar in the middle continues and starts to play the other main riff. I mean, what effects does this guitar in the middle, which starts at 0:07 have? A Univibe, a fuzz, something else? I think that guitar has a very sweet tone. Sure also the other guitars have such a great tone, but this guitar tone is so simple and juicy that I wonder if it's straight or if there are some subtle effects, like a Univibe, going on.heybanna wrote:There are 3 main guitars in Ezy Ryder.

0:07 is the straight rythym guitar sound, IMO. You can't hear it well on the studio, but live you see he is playing octave figures. IMO there are NO coloring effects on that guitar. either straight in the amp or fuzz on it.

All right, good to know that! Thanks, heybanna! I think Jimi got all the time better. I always listen to those 1970 recordings, not so much his earlier tunes. Lately I've also been listening to your You Tube uploads, heybanna!heybanna wrote: IMO there are NO coloring effects on that guitar. either straight in the amp or fuzz on it.

I like the 1970 live shows best. Check out some LIVE versions of Ezy Ryder on YouTube

That was a good idea! I found Fillmore East (your upload), Isle of Wight, Maui, Honolulu, Berkeley and Fehmarn. Did I miss something important?heybanna wrote: Check out some LIVE versions of Ezy Ryder on YouTube

Re: How 'bout the "Ezy Rider" effects?
Besides everything mentioned here:Uni-vibe etc. There's considerable tape flanging/chorus doubling going on within the panning activity of that track. This combination of effects was not available for decades. Now there are several "Thru-Zero-Flanging" units available. The first and probably best is(was) Dave Foxrox' TZF pedal, also available in stereo and special order rack versions. He's thankfully working on a new version, expected sometime soon we hope. There's also EH's "Flanger Hoax" and more recently, Strymon's "Orbit Flanger". One has to bear in mind that to get the most out of this effect you have to keep it out of your signal chain unless just jamming at home or rehearsing. For live you'll need to get the sound guy to run it through the house. If you listen to ANY of Jimi's tape flanged recordings, "House burning down, Gypsy Eyes or Axis" the whole band mix is being affected. Not that you have to make sure your drummer is also flanged but if you sincerely wish to replicate this sound you'll need it affecting the mic after your signal chain. Best when the engineer runs the entire P.A. loop mix out the mains, giving that essential panning feel to the left/right band sound. Don't try to figure it out, just make a note of it.
