His guitar slung across his back, his dusty boots is his cadillac.

Rainbow Bridge amp line-up?

Post by Purplexi » Mon May 31, 2010 1:20 pm

Anybody here have an idea what combination of heads made up the "Rainbow Bridge" backline? This set up had a distinct, multi-voice character. Maybe it's a "Black Flag" JTM Super along with one or two 6550 powered 68/69 SLP's, or simply just two EL34 based SLP's and one JTM Super?
Non expert opinions welcome!

I'll have to watch the footage again, but sounds like the standard super leads with 6550 tubes. There is a slight sterile quality to alot of Hendrix's stuff from this era. His cleans had spank, and his leads seemed more stiff, though sometimes sorta constipated.

Hendrix was playing very well at the '70 Hawaii show/s. I really like some of his leads on 'Voodoo Child (slight return). Very good use of fuzz, wha and uni-vibe.

I really appreciate your checking it out. Unlike the BOG shows, there's plenty of visual evidence. I do hear 6550 tones from the "Rainbow" backline but also hear a multi-voice thing happening like a later JTM w/34's. We'll see I guess, thanks!!
