The "Jimi Cut Holes In the Back Of His Speakers" Theory

Post by Brandon » Fri Sep 24, 2010 7:18 pm

Has anyone else heard this theory???

It sounds like a crack pot theory I heard once a long time ago... but I'm curious if anyone has ever heard (or tried) what a cab sounds like with speakers like these(that is if a speaker could actually produce sound after such a process)?

I guess I could see the reasoning behind it, perhaps that more resonance in the cab would be produced because of sound leaking out of the back of the speakers.

What are your guys' thoughts?

Do you think Jimi put holes in the back of his speakers?

Nah man, Hendrix wouldnt have done that. Link Wray, or some other old '50's era bastard might have, but Hendrix didnt. Jimi used American stuff (twin Reverbs mainly) up until he was brought to England by Chas. Jimi got very bright harsh type tones on all that pre 'Experience' stuff. You could tell it was him (those great 'b' string bends), but he wasnt 'focused'.
Going to England and laying upon some white chicks really 'shaped that dude up'.

yeah thatd probably ruin a speaker real quick. Not to mention you want a good projection of the sound, closed back everything

why not ... i mean , i would try it, but i don't know if hendrix did it. all the pctures i've seen of the back of his cabs weren't opened.
but as i don't use a cab, i use a very good speaker simulator ( i could compare it with some real cabs, and it was as much satisfying ) , an spl analog transducer. I prefer the sound of the open cab compare to the closed cab, with my superlead into i. more Hendrix, less compressed, nice cleans, nice creamy distortion.
