Re: Scary good Jimi tone!
thats pretty killer whats interesting is he is plugged into the bottom right input on a old marshall. I always thought JIMI plugged into the upper right. At the very end it says original four track tape ended and camera audio from there. The sound really changes so a lot of it is in the mix from the four track recording.

Re: Scary good Jimi tone!
Yes, great tone - thanks for the link!
Btw. i think Jimi almost always had the guitar volume turned down (it seems like a simple thing, but i'm sure it's a big part of the equation how to get these tones down) and i guess that to approximate the same tonal effect you can also bo to the normal channel and low input.
Also, in case that amp he plays on is a later Super-Lead, wouldn't their normal channel be almost as bright as the bright channel on a 45/100 or other early 100 watters? And going in the low intput would allow to crank the amp more without getting crazy amounts of gain.

Re: Scary good Jimi tone!
Actually the opposite is true - the normal channel on a split cathode SL is, IMO, almost useless on its own. It has its own 820ohm/330uF cathode resistor and cap, which in theory gives it *more* gain than on the earlier shared cathode amps. That, and the fact that 470k mixers means the mixer bypass cap has more effect, making channel 1 comparatively brighter and channel 2 comparatively duller. All this makes channel 2 on a split cathode SL very wooly, IMO.VintageCharlie wrote: Also, in case that amp he plays on is a later Super-Lead, wouldn't their normal channel be almost as bright as the bright channel on a 45/100 or other early 100 watters?
Makes me wonder what's going on with his amp...that was some stunning tone, right there. He really has that '69 Jimi tone down cold...I would love to know more about his amp and setup. EL34s or 6550s? Speakers? I think he's using an Axis fuzz...I think I need to try one of those.

Re: Scary good Jimi tone!
Thanks Shakti! I based my observations on an original early metal panel 50w lead spec that i once tried out in Germany next to JTM-45 clone. When i went into the normal channel of the metal panel, the brightness was about the same as when going into the bright channel of the JTM-45 clone. But i don't know what was going on under the hood of the metal panel - maybe it was different from stock.

Not impressed with this guy at all.

Re: Scary good Jimi tone!
If it is a 69 it has a 2.7K not 820 which is cleaner and I personally prefershakti wrote: It has its own 820ohm/330uF cathode resistor and cap, which in theory gives it *more* gain than on the earlier shared cathode amps.

Re: Scary good Jimi tone!
Not the normal channel. That always had 820/330 in the split cathode amps.
I owned a '72 SL some years ago, and that's what I base my opinion on about the normal channel. Maybe something funky was going on?

I agree, it's useless in a stock amp ..I can't use it on my 1959 SLshakti wrote:

That guy sounds good but Jimi's tone (woodstock, san diego..) is brighter, edgier and woodier
