Best Hendrix Univibe Clone?

Post by theactor19 » Mon Jan 24, 2011 9:21 pm

I'm looking for the best univibe clone that does hey baby, machine gun, and other hendrix songs to a tee. Of course we'd all like an original univibe, but unfortunately they are hard to find + cost a load of cash to get. So the next best thing, a good clone. What do you guys recommend.

Yes I am aware of both the Megavibe and Aquavibe, and put my name on the list very long ago and don't expect to get one unless resorting to Ebay and paying super inflated prices.

Here is the tone I'm looking for:

Hey Baby (live at Berkeley 1970)

Be careful what you wish for...the original Uni-Vibes are signal suckers- I like mine; I've had it since 1988. It sounds exactly like what you think it sounds like-but I have to say it sucks the most signal of any effect I have ever had. If you are trying to sound like Hendrix,Vaughan and Trower it works perfectly I must say...

Yea I assume the originals were signal suckers, although it didn't really seem to affect Jimi's tone. I mean even when he didn't have the pedal on, his tone was still great. Maybe the fact that it altered his tone a little is part of getting his tone. Thoughts?

Also more suggestions would be great.

I would say that the signal loss did affect Jimi's tone. And Trower's as well...but the signal loss was a part of their tone. When you play through an original there is a loss of signal and sustain in general. The wound up 100W Marshalls that Hendrix and Trower used with the Uni-Vibe masks quite a bit of this signal loss in my opinion...but I can hear the loss of signal nonetheless. When you have the Fuzzface and Octavia in the chain with the Uni-Vibe and the overgrown Marshall you make up for the loss of signal with sheer volume and feedback and the coloration of the tone in general from all the pedals. I find there is some accentuation of mid-range that results from using the Uni-Vibe, whether it is on or off.

As far as the best Uni-Vibe clone I couldn't offer a suggestion. I tried the Dunlop Rotovibe when it first came out in the early 90s and I thought it sounded great and very, very close to the sound that I was getting with my original Uni-Vibe. The compact footprint was really great and it had less signal loss and it was just cleaner overall, but I'll bet you could say the same for most of the other clones...It got that grunge -Screaming Trees "Nearly Lost You"-type sound (I think that's what their guitarist used on that tune.)Other than that, I'm completely out of the loop. If you are dedicated to cloning Hendrix tones as closely as possible then I would suggest getting an original. For any other application I would recommend listening to modern touring/recording artists that use Uni-Vibe clones like Trower and Doyle Bramhall II who have used a gold mono Fulltone Deja-Vibe among other Uni-Vibe clones...

I had an Original vibe once while I was playing live and what I did
is use an A/B box so A was Dry and B was going to the vibe .

It's as simple as that !!

If you have a chance check out a Boss PW10 Power Wah. The Univibe setting on it does a pretty good job IMO.

The vibe on this has more of a vibrato feel than a Univibe feel !

The wah is ok but no Wow factor !

and the fuzz on that thing sounds like a fly stuck between a wiper and the windshield !

JC maillet's vibe, with the offset mod that he invented and that has been copied later. and a mu preamp. he figured out all the details and mods to go from the original specs at their best, to an even better univibe. it inspired the forum vibe, and others. JC is truely the univibe master, over kevin randall, over RG keen etc ..

I personnaly use a kr megavibe, until i'll finish my jc maillet univibe. a bad vibe will do wii wii wiiw wiiw ... a great vibe with the offset mod will be deep and hendrixy, and will do wwoow wow woww woww woww .....

ask him one kit or one already built, it'll be cheaper than the megavibe, and better for sure.
mini dejavibe ... aargh ... throw it away, such a bad vibe. i sold mine immediatly.

hey, listen to this from 13:30
