Ah, the 'Spanish Castle Magic' lick. He used that one bit here and there for sure. It defies a certain 'shredder alternate picking prerequisite' doesnt it. Hard to play that one real fast......but then again....it doesnt have to be played fast, its just that when I first discovered it I tried to ' shred it'.

How do you guys pick this lick? I'm a little all over the map on my up/down lately. I'm in the process of unlearning a bunch of picking techniques that I beat my head against the wall with for about 20 years.

Rich, I either alternate pick it (starting down on the 12/b string, down on the 15/b (bend it up a step), up on the high E/12, down on the high e/15, up on the high e/12, up on the b/12, etc.

To get it smoother (and if need be FASTER) I simply play it exactly as above, except I PULL OFF the high E/15 note(down stroke) to the high e/12, other than that everything is the same.

Check out Jeff Beck here at approximately 44 seconds. He does a cool add on/extension to esentially this same lick. This whole song is bad assed (as well as all the others from this gig).The dude is definately a Bad Mo Fo

thanks, it's a clear shot of his picking too. You can really hear the finger strength in Beck and of course in Hendrix when they play this lick. They man-handle it, with finesse.
