Re: Hendrix set up.
You need the amp set up clean with just a little break up, turn the fuzz and volume all the way up use the volume on your guitar to control the fuzz

Re: Hendrix set up.
You might be interested to know that Jimi didn't use the fuzz on his fuzz face units, just the extra gain, and he used that to overdrive the input stage of the amps he was using, mostly Marshalls, later in his career.
When his equipment would show up at West Coast Organ and Amp, the fuzz would always be turned down. I modified all the fuzz face units for more depth, among other things that Jimi wanted to try. Just thought I'd set the record straight, since I happened to see the post tonight.

I couldn't play your links ... Turn the Fuzz Volume and Fuzz all the way up then use the guitar volume to control the fuzz

Re: Hendrix set up.
When the amps would come in they would normally have the controls up around half way, depending on the gig. As you have probably seen, Jimi would sometimes just run his hand over the controls, turning them all the way up, every last knob. He did this when he didn't feel the power he wanted, either just an emotional response, or a response to an audience vibe or bad room/sound.
The tone and volume controls on Marshall 1959 amps don't make all that much difference once the amp is well into distortion, the sound is contoured mostly by the output stage and the speakers. In the 1959 amps, like the 1959 Bassman, the tone control circuit is the last thing before the power stage, it works on everything but the distortion in the power tubes and phase inverter/driver.
On numerous occasions, Jimi just wanted more, more of everything, especially power. More output power allowed more tone flexibility on stage. With enough power, his halfway settings allowed him to go both ways with the knobs and still get some effect from them.
Overdriving the input stages of the amps with extra gain from the Fuzzface gave him that ultra-feedback regeneration he needed for the "sonic avalanche" stuff. He didn't like the real buzzy stuff from the fuzz, or at least that's what he indicated to me, and he didn't use the Fuzzface too much, especially in the more bluesy kind of playing, the sharp clean edged overdrive that everybody loves.
