Well, i got some low hfe russian, i modded a simple FF circuit with the 2k fuzz pot, changed the NFB resistor to something like 121k or 127k ohm instead of 100k. have a SI 2n3906 hfe@120 in Q1 and a russian germanium with a hfe @ 49 on Q2. It sound pretty amazing, after 10 years of testing i have to say its incredibly good.

at last , i'm sending a clip. i had a few troubles that got my mind more focused on work lately but i'm sorry i didn't take 10 minutes to do at least a little clip, sorry guys. i should have done this more than a month ago !

bad playing but here it is : from true bypass to low gain, then high gain, according to the settings that were working . and a few tests with the strat volume rolled down a bit.

- 1M full on one side ( don't remember which )

- Q1C resistor at about 15% or 85% not sure which value.this is the control that has the most effect on everything, along with the volume.

- Fuzz pot to max, but actualy it has almost zero effect in either position.

- zero input bias.

- the Q1 is perhaps too low, since i burned the first one i put in. about 40 hfe or 50 if i remember correctly.

i have some catch up to do but i read quickly that Dave, you proposed to have a look on the fuzz built maybe, and if it's still ok i'd like to send mine to you, and be more sure that it's working properly, and sounding properly.
what do you think Dave ?

i don't really find the low gain sustain / volume in my build, not fitting the volume fuzz of bog like with the Dunlop blue fuzz. maybe fitting some other Hendrix stuffs, it's hard to define how i'm going to use it, especialy if i think that my build isn't fully correct. but anyway, here it is :

I would like to hear how it sounds as a "buffer", i.e. what we assume to be the "always on" kind of setting and not the true bypass setting. Since I think the base tone with a slightly modded 69SL with 6550s, bright cap on volume 1, Uni-Vibe preamp etx sounds very close, I am curious if that bypass tone can give the last little bit.
I also wonder how it sounds into a gainier amp (assuming you were using a 45/100)?

Xplorer,
Sure send it over. If I can get it working right it will be easier for everyone to determine how close the idea comes to getting that in between sound.
Then, if you or Tek has some spare PC boards you could send, I could build one for Shakti too.

Thanks guys !

ok i'll send it to you Dave, and i'll etch a board for shakti that i'll send too :)
it's not a very small board but it's ok i think.

thorleif, the buffer type of tone : it's what you hear just after the true bypass in the beginning, and i think i fucked up my build at some point because it's a lot of fuzz rather than this always on fuzz we were talking about, and what this fuzz is supposed to do, according to the concept behind and the circuit.

bill bokey he told me recently he'll try to come on the forum, he got very busy too but he doesn't forget. and i'd wish to try this 6550 mod too for sure, and hopefully with these tubes maybe, if the idea is still on.

Am a little short in pcb material and time for a pcb, sorry :(.
It take me a good deal of time making just one board is a full day.(printing the transparencies, UV transferring, developping, etching and doing it all over again for the solder mask)
Maby next time :)

No worries Tek,
Xplorer has a spare PCB he'll contribute. I'll make sure they're working correctly before the tests.

A bit off topic but still related...I came across this guy on youtube named 'fuzzfaceexp' who seems to have figured out the nuances of the fuzz face, wah wah, etc., in order to get them to sound like Hendrix's gear. Unfortunately, he's Japanese and not very good with english so it makes acquiring information from him a bit challenging.

nice find. too bad he's recording it with some kind of iPhone. i Wonder what amp he uses.

at 00:40 he kicks the fuzz in, but before that it's the "clean" tone. ( who knows if it's an allways on fuzz , maybe ... :) )

all in all, i think that his amp settings are close to what Dave described, and the presence is pretty high on it.
i used to play without presence at all, but i was missing the picture.

i'll try to make Shakti's pcb this week end, and ship it to Dave.

Thorleif, your board is currently in the etching process. i'll drill it and ship it tomorrow to Dave hopefully.
