Late '68, early '69 restoration

Post by VelvetGeorge » Wed Jun 28, 2006 9:22 pm

I've been taking pics along the way so I thought I would show the restore process on this amp.

It's an early example of the later plexi 100 layout, with all six filter caps on top. The serial # is 10XXX, not to be confused with the earlier 10XXX amps in late '67. Thanks Marshall...

This one has been around, if only it could talk. Then again, it might just scream "NOoooooooooo".

The trannys are not original, unfortunately. But the choke probably is. It's era correct at the very least. Part #C1999 and measures exactly 5H.

The chassis has lots of extra holes as you can see. So does the rear plexi panel. The front is actually in good shape, no extra holes or cracks.

Lots of replaced parts in there.

Here's a closer shot of the board and extra tube section.

Well, the more I removed, the more obvious it became that I needed to start almost from scratch.

The choke was in the wrong place, the transformers needed to be removed to have wires replaced and routed correctly, the tube sockets are being replaced.......

So it went on the chassis jig and off came the parts.

The board components were all removed so I threw it on the scanner.

Pure art.

Making progress on the reassembly.

Each part gets cleaned with solvent and a detailing brush before being reinstalled. I spent a lot of time cleaning the chassis too.

Jesus, that chassis looks like swiss cheese....how many different OT's have been on that thing??

I really appreciate that only six holes were added to my Super PA chassis now.

Are you gonna put a new Metroamp OT in there?

We're sticking with the OT that's been on the amp since the late 70's for now.

Here's the latest progress.

I managed to finish all the wiring and fire this amp up: I'm really happy with the results!!! I wasn't sure about the OT, but I don't see any reason to change it.

I haven't put the strapping on the wires yet, or put the knobs back on. But otherwise, I'm done.

You do beautiful work George,it warms my heart being an old electronics tech/wireman,to see such painstakingly intricate work.
You are indeed a master,no doubt.
