Blue Yeti YRGM1 is the mice pointed in towards the center but off axis a bit. Ibanez/Greco destroyer with stock Maxon 2000. Split into L/R tracts with Audacity.

Blue Yeti YRGM2 is the mic pointed out towards the cone. Unidirectional. Ibanez/Greco destroyer with stock Maxon 2000. Split into L/R tracts with Audacity. I also turned the mics gain down a little to see what it would do. Its low, so you need to turn it up.

Blue Yeti YRGM3, I went back to the Franky with the 12K Stewmac. I pointed the front of the mic directly at the center and the left side of the mice off axis towards the middle of the cone. I turned on the mics "stereo" function. Keep in mind these mics have three mic heads all in different directions. This automatically splits the tracts into stereo on the screen. I doubled it L/R, added a little delay to the right and decreased the right volume a bit. I'm standing off to the side of the cab and you can still hear my pick. These mics are so sensitive its unbelievable. this tract is much better with headphones.

Guitar is straight in. No EQ'ing whatsoever. The 3rd take is really acting like 2 mics together. Kinda cool eh?

Getting better at this, so it takes a bit of learning to record something decent. :)
Yes, these sound great. The second one sounds muffled a bit. I am trying to picture what you are describing for #2.

What speakers are these again?

#2, I had the mic at a weird angle. Just thought I'd add that to show how the mic position really effects the outcome.

It really did. I liked the stereo clip.

Shannon, your Oct. 2012 clips have got me interested in possibly bringing my 12xxx to stock (I went straight to v1 cascade, ppimv, ala 'Mod 5'). I got a few questions,

How much can you attenuate the volume, before you 'crap out', regarding gain/volume scenario's (I hear an attenuator sounds pretty compressed/harsh sounding at high attenuation)

Should I stay with my Rockstah 'mod 5' spec, considering I 'practice' at lower volumes with this thing.

I hope I get to play 'out' more in the future (I've sessioned lately, but havent played loud since '03 :o ), so VOLUME is something I want, just need a bit of versatility. I'm thinking my v1 cascade/ppimv is more versatile than ' cranked' into a attenator'. Whats your take on it ?

I know it's a steep price to pay, but the most valuable and worth while investment I've made in the past 5 years was an aracom. It's unbelievable down to to bedroom level. At the lowest settings its compressed, but at "loud bedroom" it's great. I never had a Faustine in front of me, but I stopped looking after trying the aracom.

I actually even tore out every PPIMV i had across 3 different amps.

Most of the newer attenuators are great. Alex, Aracom, Faustine, Rockcrusher....

They all do well at low room volumes. I think the trick is, at lower room volumes...say talk level/TV level...is to ony use 1 speaker. Trying to get anything to push through 4 speakers at a low volume, just isnt the same. At least thats what I've found. I have a Pulsonic 003 cone in a 1/12 cab I like at low volumes but turning up I have to have the Blackbacks.

As far as versitility goes there is pros and cons to both setups. I like the non MV tone myself. It just has more depth to it. The harmonics just sound better going through the power tubes. When you play hard the amp overdrives itself. Play soft and it lightens up. Play a cord lightly and you can hear every note.

The other thing is tubes....with a MV, no matter what you got in the power section...it still sounds the same. You only notice a big difference in power tubes when you can really open them up, even though its attenuated. The DTNA clip I did you can really hear how the non MV works with that sound. You can hear the low E under everything. You can hear great harmonics and overdrive when I play a little harder. The "clear clank" is there too. A master volume can sound thin on passages like that. A MV crams everything in the front and then tries to squash it out the end in a bottleneck.

That's a great way to describe it... it's also why I took the PPIMV's out, my personal tastes gravitate towards the organic overdriven sounds. Not clipping in the PI.

Attenuators & PPIMV's tame the wild beast...
I honestly really feel bad for all those who cannot crank their Marshall 1959/2203 and 1987/2204 for that matter.
I can alarmingly say... You will NEVER know in this department.... very sad. Do you need me to explain ?>

In today's world we all know, and even the market wants you to have an Atomic amp that weighs as much as their briefcase... :?
Pay to play gents. Because recording is another realm of musician. To take it to the next level there is NO other way than to crank the snot out of your amp and FEEL the POWER... Can you DIG IT !

Oh I know what you mean...I love my Rockstah Mod 5 Marshall combo, but I do somewhat miss the "realism" of a cranked amp and 4 x 12 cabinet. But in the end I'm super happy with what I have and I appreciate the ability to play with a nice sound while still being the upstanding, grown ass 40 year old man that I am and not getting my wife and I kicked out of our townhome

A MV amp is like eating 12 taco's at Taco Bell on Saturday...and then expect a normal relaxing Sunday.

Yeah, thats the problem with most. A basic attenuator that only does room volume is needed. No bells and whistles. Priced/cost/DIY build under $125.00.

But then even the physical presence of a 4 x 12 cabinet is just plain not going to be practical for me in my small townhome and ocassional small club and studio playing that I do. I could get an attenuator and a head and 4 x 12 setup, but then I can't justify the huge cabinet in my guest bedroom that houses my guitars and amps and I am not going to hire a roadie to move a fucking 4 x 12 cabinet!

I have 2 4/12 cabs in my living room. They also serve as functional furniture. One still has a large glass bowl containing assorted Christmas decorative soaps shaped like snow flakes. I already used the bubble bath.
