somethin'else wrote:Ey, going well there. I see you did the old nudgey-nudge to the Choke. I did the same thing. A little tight with that preamp filter right? Nice buss on the pots, looks solid. That Step 10's a Doozy, in'nit?

The best is yet to come :)

Thanx Dave. Yeah i had to do the nudge! Ya know, just about every step had something that turned into a doozy...but they are all learning experiences. So the next one will go together just a little easier. Now that the panels are on their way i can finish up the impedance selector, light, and fuse holders. Its getting there! And im loving every second i get to work on it!

You did a great job, it almost looks like a trophy. Did you hook up the ground wire to the bias capacitors?

Hey everyone,

I finished up my build today and was able to fire it up. EVerything went pretty smoothly. As i was biasing, the V7 tube was set at 35 mv , V6 was 30, V5 was 29, V4 was 30. Seemed like i was at the limit of my " matched set" of my JJ's . I plugged in a guitar and was playing for playing for roughly 10 minutes with no problems or strange noises. I put the amp on standby, got a drink, i took the amp off standby and heard some strange noises coming from my speakers (think moogerfooger) and then i blew the 4 amp fuse. After replacing the fuse, i turned the amp on and tried to check bias....my V7 tube which was high before was now down in the 25mv ranger and the other tubes were racing up, i shut the amp down as they approached 40 mv. I didnt notice any redplating since everything happened kinda fast. After removing the tubes and rechecking all my voltages, i replaced the tubes with a different set ( winged c ) and turned the amp back on. I biased the tubes and then rechecked them again. V4-7 all had a pin 3 voltage of 479, The mv reading was V7-32, V6-33.5, V5-34, V4-31.8

Im assuming for right now i blew the JJ tube at V7. Ill have a friend check them for me on his tester tomorrow. For now im gonna keep playing and keep checking the bias and watch for any redplating.

Ok, i decided to keep going. Finished the wiring for the low voltage mod and tested. I finished with 388DCV at pin 3 and biased V7=40, V6=42, V5=39, V4=39. Im biasing a bit to the lower side of the range for now since i had the problem with the jj tube. After i play it for i while and recheck it im planning on increasing it a bit.

Nice job fella!

Make sure all those caps are not resting directly on related resistors. The heat sometimes will/can ruin the outside of the cap. Just need a "hair of air" in between.

The yellow and black wire on that preamp tube shouldn't be running parallel like that, cross them a little more like the one to the right. You'd be surprised at the little extra noise that can create.

Is the cap on the presence pot attached to the middle lug? It looks like it's on the ground.

It's a law here that your not allowed to build an amp without posting clips.

Hey thanks for the input. I checked all your highlights and i have space between the mica caps and the other components.

I moved the yellow wire on V2 over a bit. I thought the only wires you needed to be concerned with running parallel were the blue and green wires.

I will post some clips. Just need to wait for all the neighbors to go to work on Tuesday first! And i would like to install the larmar first. Im gonna try to get started on that today.

Thanks again for checking my work.
