Are you arguing that matched tubes are not all they are cracked up to be? To a certain extent? I have thought for a while that back in the 60s and 70s when a tube was replaced they didn't do an entire matched set. You do get some "colour" that it hard to describe.

Now if you are talking about a hi-fi amp with 300B, KT88 or even a Quad II with KT66s then really close matched valves across the curve are highly desirable. For me that is a good thing as it means we get the left overs .
