Are you arguing that matched tubes are not all they are cracked up to be? To a certain extent? I have thought for a while that back in the 60s and 70s when a tube was replaced they didn't do an entire matched set. You do get some "colour" that it hard to describe.

Thanks
Yes I am. As long as you are not biased too hot that you are getting close to trashing the tubes prematurely and the cold ones are not well off (more than 10mA below) then I think you are good to go.
Now if you are talking about a hi-fi amp with 300B, KT88 or even a Quad II with KT66s then really close matched valves across the curve are highly desirable. For me that is a good thing as it means we get the left overs :wink: .

Good, I have Sylvania 6CA7s that are in the ball park but not perfectly matched and haven't had a problem yet. That being said, I variac them down to about 340 v on the plates and run the bias up.

I decided to get some mustards for my build. Not that I don't like the SoZos but I wanted to improve my amp a bit. I'll post some ebay links so please check them out and let me know if I'm buying the right thing. :-)

1.) 0.0022uf - http://www.ebay.com/itm/MULLARD-MUSTARD ... 3ccbad6b57" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This one is 20%. Valvestorm sells 10%. Is there a big difference in quality?

2.) 0.022 http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-pcs-Mullard- ... 33612fa4d7" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

3.) 0.1 http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-OF-FIVE-MUL ... 1e74cbe748" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's it. Maybe I'll be able to get the 0.68s as well some day but the prices are insane nowadays. I've got Soviet made PIO paper oil 0.68s on my way to experiment with. I read somewhere they were put into the first Marshalls before the mustards. If I'm not happy with them I'll try to get some chicklets instead.

The German seller with the 0.022uFs is very good (I have bought some from him -easy transaction).

I have also bought sets from Giannis too also very reliable. The Valvestorm 0.0022uF are fine as well.

The first caps on the offsets were the blue/grey tubular paper caps labelled with the RS flying man logohttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/three-tub-pap ... t_22wt_959, not sure where they originated? The other cap use then was the light brown rectangular 0.1uF 250v also RS labelled but made by TCC (http://www.ebay.com/itm/TCC-CAPACITOR-0 ... _783wt_647).
Then came the mustards. Some also used the grey RS labelled Dubiliers(http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130805604483? ... t_57wt_989) or the 69/70 ones blue/cream etc.

In short buy the mustards. They work well, are reliable, are nice and smooth 8)

Thanks Neil ! I'll try to get that one 0.0022uf mustard elsewhere then. I prefer to get one in EU though and I don't want to bother Robert because of one cap. :-)

Oh and now I see I used another link for the 0.022s. This is the right one (I need only six).

This is a better price, you'd get 10 pieces for 40 pounds which is less than $100.

I think that you will find the ones in the UK auction (ie cheaper ones) are 160v rated which I would not trust in a plexi.
