Sourcing parts for 50w lead 71 Spec.

New to this board and building and I have a few questions.

It seems that getting SOZO Caps is a no go right now. Anyone have any info?
Should I just substitute Mallory 150 for the time being?

Also, anyone have any idea where I could get my hands on a dual 50uf axial cap to fit on the Valvestorm board?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I personally use mustards but a lot of people like the Mallory 150 type

For mustards you ideally need 6 0.022uF:

But you can get away with 4 of the 0.022uF ones above and substitute a pair of 0.033http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MULLARD-MUSTA ... 158wt_1219, 0.047http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-PCS-MULLAR ... 275wt_1172 or 0.056uF in the PI output positions all of which sound very good even in a lead spec 1987 .

You need one 0.0022uf for V1b this is cheaper:

You need 400v rating for the coupling caps and 100v rating for the cathode bypass caps and the presence cap.

Of course if you are not in a hurry you can shop around/wait and get cheaper (that is what I do when my supply runs low) but certainly pay no more than the prices above.

I had a similar question. I have a Granger M50. It sounds good but lacks smoothness, I guess that is a word. I changed out my power tubes for winger C's and V1 with a nos tube and that has helped a bunch. I was actually thinking of selling but after tube swap it is starting to get the sound I am looking for.

I was looking at the guts of the board and noticed all of the caps are mojo dijon. I think I already know the answer, but worth it to swap them out and put in....... Mustards? or at least Sozo's ??

mojo dijon's are polypropylene
I'd change them with smoother and sweeter sounding caps: sozo, 150's and/or mustards. You don't need to stick with just one brand, combine them if you like

Mojo Dijon/TAD Mustard are NOT polypropylene, that is misinformation that has cropped up on some sites. They are in fact metallized polyester film, much like Vishay/ERO MK1813, and Mallory 150's. Sozo's, Philips C296 Mustards, Sprague 716P Orange Drops (bear in mind there are MANY different range of Orange Drops with different construction), and the "Chiclet" Philips MKT-P cap are all Polyester film + foil sandwiched construction.

By the way, Mallory 150's are just renamed Cornell Dubilier 150 series capacitors, which can be had for less money.

Polypropylene are also most likely to be smoothest sounding, but polypropylene caps are usually physically much larger than most other types.

There should be a slight difference audibly between Dijon's and Sozo's, but probably very little difference between Dijon's, 150's, and MK1813's. Although in past tests in an 18W Marshall I did have a slight preference for 1813's over 150's, but to be fair, the 150's hadn't had much use, which may make all the difference. Capacitors do settle, and don't instantly sound like they will 100hours into the future.

I have gathered all the Mullards required to recap my Granger. I will be using the chiclets for the .68 values.

Don't know how much of a difference I will be able to hear, but still looking for a little bit "more" out of it.

I also, gathered up all of the parts I believe are necessary to do the MOD 5 on the amp. This is assuming that all of the values etc listed on the thread are applicable to the early 70s 50 watt.

Only question is if I do the MOD 5 will I lose some of the versatility of the amp to get some led zeppelin sounds. If it turns the amp into a one trick poney I may just hold of and see how the wampler pinnacle or other box does in front of the amp.
