68-69 Superbass Iron?

Post by revolver1 » Wed May 03, 2017 3:31 pm

Hi all,
Forgive me if you have seen a similar question posted in a couple of different sections. I'm planning out a few different builds but have a similar question regarding different amps.

So is the iron in a 68/early 69ish Superbass the same as in the Superlead from the same period? And what about the choke is it 3 Henry's or something else?

Thanks in advance.

Yes...the difference between the bass and lead are just a few different component values. Not sure on the choke as they did use several different models. Here is a great sight with lots of info on different Marshall amps over the years....http://marstran.com/Historic%20Data%20Base.htm Be sure to click on the Marshall pictorial page link also as it shows several different examples of individual amps.

I had seen the Marstran site before but hadn't noticed the pictorial link, very good.

With regard to the choke value most of them were not listed. I did see a 67 S.B that was listed as 20 Henry but the other 68/69 era were just listed as Dagnall. Not sure if this automatically points to a particular value?

I wanna say that most of the lead and bass circuits used 3-5 henry chokes as the years went by. Hopefully Neikeel or one of the other knowledgeable members here will see this and have the correct answer. You may also want to try emailing Brian at Marstran as I'm sure that he would know the correct specs.

I was thinking of contacting Brian but didn't want to bother him since I'm maybe 4 to 5 weeks away from pulling the trigger.

When I did my 69 superlead I went with a 3h choke and It sounded and feelt great. Unfortunately all my gear got stolen so I'm having to start over, but I'm going to make up for it by building 4 different amps I need a hobby.

Knowing the super bass circuit has pretty much remained the same throughout the years and with the extra bass response it's got me wondering about the choke value.

I'm not even 100% on it's effect, I've read conflicting posts on the net. Some say 3h is loose and 40h is tight and others say the complete opposite (not on this site). I don't know what to believe.

Most 67-69 SB and SL amps had 3H chokes, Drake 354-114 at first then C1999 Dagnalls, but basically same spec.

I did service a 67 JTM100 Bass that has a 20H RS type choke as stock. A bit cleaner at lower volumes but fine when pushed.

I would go 3H either Drake type from Georges store or Dagnall from Brian at Marstran.

As always a wealth of knowledge. Cheers Neikeel.

I was thinking about building this one with a lot of headroom so the 20h might be one to consider.
