'67 Superbass vs Metropoulos #10036

Post by VelvetGeorge » Sat Nov 02, 2013 5:56 pm

Another shootout video of sorts. Head Master switching between a 1967 Superbass SL/ 10418 and Metropoulos 10,000 series # 10036.
The replica does have mustard caps, so it's not exactly my production model.

Sonically, I find these to randomly sound anywhere between exactly alike to quite different. Sometimes the original is bright, open and aggressive. Other times it seems dark and moody, in a good way. Same with the replica, but not as drastic.
I think my playing might vary more than the amps do. And I apologize in advance for the utilitarian playing. It's definitely not playing you watch for enjoyment.

:worthy:

As with the other clips the bass is slightly crisper and note separation is better in the replica which is all pretty typical of a 45 year old amp and a new one, and only by a hairs breadth.
In some bits I prefer the replica!

Wow, that is amazing! Balanced the volume perfectly, and the amp switcher is so cool for comparison.
Curious based on the pic, seems the original has the smaller (1.5'') Dagnall?

Most later 10 series are Dagnall OT, early 67 ones -119 drake, mid 67 ones -132, late 67 and 68 the Dagnall C1998. There is a timeline somewhere

No way I could tell the difference in a blind test ! They're slightly different in the midrange. I think I prefer the original on most riffs and it might have something to do with the OT.

Another great replica, well done !
