76-78 2203 Iron?

Hi all,
I've been doing some looking about but have come across some conflicting info mostly concerning the choke so I'm after a bit of advice from those in the know. I'm planning a 76-78 period 2203 build, so are the PT and OT the same as in the 69 (1959) Plexi or are they something else? Also how many Henry's on the choke?
Thanks in advance.

The 70s JMPs have pretty much the same iron AFAIK

OT will be C2668 (C2373)
PT a variation on T2652 ie T4145

The early chokes were 3H C1999 Dagnalls but in mid 70s (Tazin amy now when) they changed to the bell cover type. The one I know of is the Drake 1471-263 which is actually 5H rated at 120mA.

Not sure about the others!

Been looking round and I see Classic T... do a 5h, 120ma bell cover choke. But the PT and OT are paper not nylon.

Not quite sure how this would affect tone? Would paper although not authentic make for a better amp?

Does anyone know of any other options other than MM?

Would I be better approaching a builder with the above transformer codes? I would have approached them a bit earlier but I'm probably 4 to 5 weeks away from making the purchase and didn't want to bother them prematurely.

Classic Tone transformers are great, the OT probably isn't as good as Marstran, M e r r e n and Metro but the PT and choke are great !

That's promising to hear. I've got to admit I'm kinda tempted by C T for this build but I'm concerned it will turn out more plexi than 2203. Like a Plexi with a cascade mod rather than 2203. The thing is I definitely want to shoot for the 75 - 78 version and not post 80's which I guess would be leaning more to the Plexi tone.

Sorry thats not very clear, I mean the 75 -78 version would sound more Plexi than a post 80's 2203.

So should I just go with a stand up PT a C1998 OT and go with a 5h, 120ma choke?

I can sell a Dagnall C2668 if you want, I have a few sitting on a shelf, removed from 1959 RIs

Ive just looked up the C2668 and realised its the same iron that was in my '96' 1959 RI.

That amp tormented me for 14 years with love/hate until I found Metroamp. Thanks for the offer bill but I'll have to pass.

I know it's not accurate but I think I'll go with late Plexi iron with a 5h, 120ma choke.

I guess if Marshall can put together a 70's sounding amp and pass it off as a 60's RI why can't I build a 60's sounding amp and pass it off as a 70's RI.....

Thanks to all for their input.
