Re: Ed's Franky (beneath the paint)
I don't believe most of the stuff Ed said in the old interviews because I've heard all sorts of interesting stories since I've been working in the amp biz...
supposedly, there's a '56 Tweed Deluxe and '59 Gretsch Duo Jet that Ed has rented a few times from an LA rental service... since Fair Warning. It's what I was told. Not SIR... Brauer maybe.. I can't recall.

Re: Ed's Franky (beneath the paint)
Ok - that was a fun read What I am curious about is has anyone determined the cut of the piece of wood Franky´s neck is/was made of ? And by that I am wondering most about "the" neck that was on for the VH1 pics and recording. Has it been decided which neck was on the guitar for the recording ?

We know for a fact that he rented the Rickenbacker electric 12-string that he used on "In A Simple Rhyme" from Studio Instrument Rentals (S.I.R.)...

So no one knows what cut of wood the neck was ? And how about which neck was on for the VH1 recordings ?

You really have to read all the threads on all the forums and make up your own mind. The majority believe that the neck used to record the album was the Boogie Bodies/Lynn Elsworth neck pictured on the first album cover which was birdseye maple with a regular rock maple fingerboard, rosewood fret marker inlays and brass side markers with a standard nut (not the brass one). But there are many that think it is the strat neck with the rosewood fingerboard you see in the Jenny Lens pictures and the (still) incredible picture of the unfinished Frankenstein body that this thread is about.Skoorb wrote:So no one knows what cut of wood the neck was ? There is no definitive proof of course and you have to look at all the photographic evidence and put it all together and draw your own conclusions...

Ok so nobody has mentioned whether it was flat or rift sawn. Obviously, since it is birdseye, - it is not quartersawn.

Re: Ed's Franky (beneath the paint)
Ok resurrecting a sort of old thread....a guy posted these pictures that I hadn't seen on Facebook. What sticks out to me is how "flat" the bottom (side) of the lower horn is or maybe it is how sharp the transition is from the top of the guitar to the side/bottom.

I think that is a 1/2" rollover? Nice and crisp! Just another obvious difference from that burst strat that everyone thought was the Franky.

I can't recall seeing that first one either...interesting view of that transition which is indeed quite sharp. And I agree it is yet another nail in the coffin of the sunburst strat theory.

Gotta love the old Gibson logo on the headstock in the first photo above.
Very tight looking rollover. Almost like the sharpness you see on Soloist bodies.

Re: Ed's Franky (beneath the paint)
This article is said to be from early sept right before the went in the studio so it looks like the finished version was done and used for VH I, Look at the length of eddie s hair, it was slightly longer on the two VH I album pics proving these are from BEFORE the album not after.

Yep, so now the question is whether that black paf in there was rewound at that point or not. Eddie claims it was. The Duncan '78 is,imo, very similar to what Ed had. It lets a Ash strat retain its 'Stratiness' but at the same time has just enough balls.

How did the JB sound with the ceramic ?Strat78 wrote:I was all over the A8 ten years ago. I tried an A8 in the JB, it was way too twangy. I tried everything in that JB including ceramics. I can't believe I'm defending an A2, but when you run the amp properly, the A2 is perfect. It does not push into the correct gain zone on it's own like an old wax potted DSD does, but the perceived gain and hair you hear on the first record is from a variac starved circuit being slammed up front with a mxd 6-band. If the pickup were any hotter, that set up would sound horrible. Here is a JB with an A2 going through the proper amp without a 6-band or variac. The hair and gain that is missing comes from running the equipment as above stated:
