This has been out there since November, 2013 courtesy of this Pat Badger (Extreme's Bassist) interview. Awesome! We now have a picture and we have a statement from someone who has been in the hallowed rooms of 5150.

"Pat Badger: Oh yeah. I have one picture that I’m holding the Frankenstrat in 5150 and leaning on his Plexiglas Marshall that he used on all the early shit. So I’m holding the guitar and leaning on the amps that recorded 'Eruption.' It doesn’t get much better than that really for a Van Halen fan."

We were led to believe Van Halen recorded his early stuff with one variac'd (magic) amp and one cab. Not so. Ed variaced his Superlead amp and then lined out that signal to a Marshall P.A.

Judging by jnew's awesome tests http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=44867 Eddie probably recorded with his Superlead variac'd down to 70 volts and then pushed the speakers hard with the volume on the Master P.A.

Only issue I have here is assuming Pat Badger got it right -- knew enough to get it right. We are talking about bass player right?? lol

Cheap shot at bass players...Ouch. Lol.

Regardless of his choice of instrument, Badger is a professional musician. He's very qualified to dissect any amplifier rig especially when preamps and power amps are so prevalent in the world of electric guitar: both guitar and bass.

Also notice the standing blocks in between the Superlead and the P.A. It really looks like those amps have been sitting together for a while and for an important reason. The P.A. is not the ticket but an important part of the signal chain.

Always cool seeing different pics of the 12301 and that particular shot shows the tolex rips pretty clearly. I think that BASS PLAYER called the amp a "Plexiglass Marshall"

This just made me feel even better about getting that 68 Pa to add to my 68 SL

Yep, he recorded Eruption through a '68 Superlead, into a Marshall PA, into a striped Peavey 5150 cabinet.

You are saying this based on this picture? Or is this something someone from the vh camp told you? :what:

5150 cabinets debuted on about the 9th Van Halen album. 'Eruption' was on the 1st Van Halen album... :)
