Painting B&W Frankie without paint ridges?

Hi guys, I'm currently making my own black and white Frankie. I'm planning on stripping the poly off a knockoff strat, going straight to Dupli-Color automotice black laquer (no primer/grain filler since it's basswood), masking the stripes and then painting the white.
Iam concerned that the paint ridges will be large for the stripes. I don't want to clear coat or wetsand the paint at all, like Eddie's. Is there any way for me to be sure the paint will feel as close to flush as possible?
Could I paint black, mask, strip the black everywhere that will end up being white, and then spray the white?
Or would sanding the unmasked areas work better?
