BB RI PTP board update

Post by VelvetGeorge » Thu Jun 17, 2004 3:37 pm

Man, that's a lot of acronyms!!!

Well, I've had the boards laid out and drilled for several weeks. The cog in the works has been the shitty tremelo circuit.
I went to great length to recreate the original and to make it look original. But the circuit sucks! I've tried swapping some values, different taper pots. It doesn't help, much.

Please see my poll and enter your feelings on this.

tremolo circuit - make a better one?

Post by McGoogle McDougal » Thu Jun 17, 2004 10:13 pm

Hey George,
I don't know how other folks have voted so far, but I voted for you making it better. I like having the tremolo option on the amp, but it's certainly not the best tremolo ever invented! That said, I'll go for it either way - new circuit or old.

What's your thoughts on what you'd change (both circuit-wise and the sound/feel)?

Personally, I think he should do away with the solid state tremolo and install a Fender vibrato circuit. Ya GOTTA love the sound and feel of an optocoupled vibrato! 8)

Naw....you really want the two tube "harmonic vibrato" circuit. I think it was the white tolex amps that had that for a while. The optocoupled blackface circuit is good, but not compared to the earlier circuit!

i voted to improve/replace the "shitty" tremolo circuit and do something different. One of the best onboard tremolo's I've ever heard in any amp is the one in the AC30HW - it sounds absolutely stunning and it's tube driven :D It's one of the very few onboard tremolos that anyone has done right! The opto tremolo on Fender's etc doesn't even come close to this one - believe me. Velvetgeorge - you might want to look into it and see if it's possible to do something similar. Another good choice would be the old Ampeg or Magnatone circuits...........

tremolo circuit

So George, tell us what you did with the tremolo circuit! How do you like it and did it require much more in the way of parts?

I'm just finishing up a layout with the reissue trem circuit. I expect to install it in the next few days, so I'll have a report for your guys soon.

So what's the good word? I'm excited to hear what solution you've arrived at.

Added question about your boards, are you using the same components as the RI board or have you upgraded them to get closer to the original BB circuit?

I have a new layout that uses the tremelo circuit found in the RI. It's better, but still not Vox quality.

The components are definately an upgrade over the stock RI stuff. These boards will use Sozos of course.

Personally, I never use the BB tremelo. If I was a big trem guy I would've bought a different amp. So, I guess, this isn't as big a deal to me as it might be to some.

Great to hear. So when are these bad boys going to be available to us?!

I've been documenting the install with my digital camera. will have to get the instructions, layout diagram ect together before I can offer the kit.

If someone is inclined, and doesn't want to wait, I can sell the board and components next week.

I haven't worked out the price yet.

Bluesbreaker reissue PTP board, take two.

I just finished this up about 2AM and I'll fire it up in the morning. This trem circuit should be better. Fingers crossed......

So how does she sound?

Slightly off-topic: What tubes are you running it her? I've had some JJ-Telsa 6L6s in mine and I think I'd like to switch. Any recommendations? EL34s? KT66s?

Well, that amp shipped out today. I had to tweak some values in the tremelo circuit to make it even usable. Not great, but it does properly.

It will take a few weeks to get the documentation together for a kit. But I know you guys are eager, so.....

if you're willing to build one of these with only detailed pictures of the board and install provided, come and get 'em.

I'm still working out the priceing. Email me if you're interested.
