Is there a big difference soundwise to justify replacing Sozo's? Opinions please.

Based on my experience of the first series of Sozos I would say yes. I have used other caps too, but find that I really like the mustards in my Marshalls.

Though I have no experience yet with the next gen sozo, I have found real mustards to be more vocally midrange focused in voicing. Makes brighter and glassier modern components used elsewhere more manageable. The original solo standards were much more scooped and sizzle imo. I liked these for the .68cathode bypass caps, whereas the vintage was smoother sounding in this position (kinda like chicklets vs mustard in vintage Marshall’s) . The vintage sozos were fatter and smoother but still had more sizzle than grind. I have a set of next gens sozo I am looking to build into a new amp to compare to the rest. Would love to hear others opinions. Gonna order some of those new 500pf sozo caps ; excited to hear those.

Old thread but what the hell...

I switched from Sozo to Mustards about 10 years ago and immediately noticed that the mids were "warmer" and clearer and the highs had less "sizzle". Now, the difference is probably not something you'll fully appreciate in a band mix or recording but there is a difference. Who knows how age may warm up the Sozo's (too early to tell).

I used the standard SoZo's in my first 50w 1987 build in 2007.

I got the premium SoZo caps 9 years ago for my second 50w 1987 Metro build.

After comparing the two with identical tubes & speakers, the 2nd one sounded much fuller, less sizzle, and overall a much richer tone. I swapped out the original 2007 standard SoZo capped 50w to NOS mustards after that in 2010.

I have to say the 2009 premium SoZo's sound every bit as good as the NOS Mustards in a 50w circuit, not only to me, but to everyone that comes over for a demo.

I haven't needed any caps for some time, but I'd imagine John has just made the caps better since then, and IMO you are probably spending cash needlessly for a new build on NOS Mustards. I did put NOS Mustards in a couple amps that already were 69 & 71 vintage to replace blown parts, but if they hadn't been available, I wouldn't have hesitated to put current production premium SoZo caps in as replacements.

YMMV, IMO, IME, and all those other catch phrases apply.

That echoes my experience with the early Sozos. George seems to like Mallories again (but for new amps which he may tweak to suit the cap he uses). I'll have to try the newer ones.

I can't comment on that, which is why I put dates on the caps I used. I would guess the Premium SoZo caps from 2009 are a generation or two earlier than the NexGen caps.

Would you also recommend NexGen caps instead of NOS mustard caps to save money?

Yes. A full set of caps from SoZo is $60 or so, right? You'll spend five times that amount getting NOS mustards with what they charge for them now.

That's a great price as long as they're genuine. The last set I got was for my Germino Headroom 100 but I had Greg source original 1968 NOS Mustard caps, and it cost a bit more than that 6 years ago.

I've bought from this guy before but it wasn't mustards. Obviously if you're looking for .68 mustards to go with this the price would be higher.
