'69 Superbass Question

Post by Herec » Tue Jul 18, 2006 9:49 pm

Hey guys,

Are the caps still the old style mounted in the pre-'69 style or would I be able to just use the 100 watt step-by-step directions on the CD.

Any other build differences between the two would be greatly appreciated.

Also, what's the main difference between it and the '67 Superbass, specifically a "black flag" JTM Superbass?

Thank you.

A '69 Super Bass (or one of George's kits) would have the cap cans all mounted on top of the chassis, just like the step-by-step instructions show.

The real difference between a '67 Super Bass and a '69 is the power supply, especially the filtering layout and values. As we've noted before, you can lower the values used in the '69 style kit to get close to the '67 values. Keep two of the 50/50uF cans from the kit, then get three 32/32uF cans and one 16/16uF can. The dual 16 would go over the turret board, one dual 32 in the corner by the power tranny, and the two dual 50's and two other dual 32's inthe grouping of four cans in between the trannies.

How much effect does the filtering have on the sound?

lower filtering = looser and spongier
higher filtering= tighter and stiffer

to put an idea on it metal players would probably prefer higher filtering.

blues players would probably prefer lower filtering.

Was there that much of a difference between '67 and '68 Superbasses?

The Super Basses were pretty damn similar through the mid-70's. The years from '67 through '69 saw a number of changes in the layout of the power supply and some changes to the filtering values, but I'm not sure there was much of a difference tonewise other than tightening up a bit with extra filtering on the high voltage.
But I don't think you can go wrong with any Super Bass from those years.
