My SLO Clone Build

Post by FourT6and2 » Wed Jul 30, 2014 12:23 am

Just finished this one. It was super fun! No real problems at all. I decided to elevate the heaters. No noise or anything. Pretty quiet. Just a little hiss with the gains and masters up past 12:00, which is in cranked/dimed territory by that point.

Seconded!
Looks great. I know there's the SLO clone forum. Last I checked over there I wasn't clear if people still had the trannys and boards available.

It's a beautiful build....let's see MORE!

I used O'Netics transformers from C3. Pretty much a stock SLO circuit except I went with a 33K input grid resistor on V1 instead of 68K, and I elevated the heaters with a DC reference off of the Choke to about 40-45 volts to help with any potential noise and to alleviate some of the stress on the cathode follower preamp tubes.

Build diary and more photos can be found here (this forum won't let me post the photos since they're too large, and I don't want to spend the time to resize them): http://www.rig-talk.com/forum/viewtopic ... 3&t=156129

Yes I skimmed the thread linked, looks great, like the comparison at the end to. The high quality pics are, as you would expect, outstanding!

Great job documenting the build. I've never played a SLO but find it intriguing and would like to build one someday. Right now I am focused on building the cab for my latest dual Marshall build.

With some help from SDM, I've played around with the input grid resistors. Very much correct that 68K input provides a lot of hiss....brand of resistors also contribute. I use the Vishay / Dale metal film resistors (RN65) and they help tame the hiss a lot...carbon film and carbon comp too noisy in any type of MV setting. Also....went down to 15K input resistors and did 100pF cap over the plate and cathode. no noise and very quiet...doesn't mess with tone at all and keeps hiss to minimum.

Yeah, if I do another build I might go with a lower value on the input grid. There is a good amount of hiss in the SLO circuit as is. And I'll add a loop bypass switch along with maybe a tweak here and there for a more modern, tighter sound with more mid-range emphasis. And I'll use polyester MKT368 caps instead of the Sprague 716s.

High quality build, and a great diary! Best I have ever seen out there. Will come in handy for anyone building a SLO clone.
Thank you!

Clips. Recorded with my laptop's webcam, soooo not the greatest quality but you'll get the idea.

Nice clean! Noise free, it seems.
Overdrive seems to be tight and well "articulated" - with chords every single note rings evenly.
Must be great "in person".
