From memory, yes. Although I may have backed off the volume I a little as after about 3oClock the gain just mushes up.Littlewyan wrote:Also is that with every control on 10? Minus the normal channel volume.

The G12C is actually a G12H really and I hated the G12M-65 as well. I got G12M Heritage Speakers and they sound amazing. You need basketweave salt and pepper cloth with them though.
The Marshall on that page you quoted is very different. Its a unique specimen .
Try your 73 again with everything at 10, including the PPIMV.
What attenuator are you using?

The G12Cs were the ones from The Vintage Modern cabs. And also used in the Hendrix 100 reissue cabs. Allegedly based on a reference G12M from the 60s. Not my cup of tea though!
I cranked my 78 outside once on full volume. It's pretty similar in sound to my 73. It sounded horrible! Brittle and stiff. Seems to me that the 'Sweet Spot' was at a much lower volume.
I will press ahead with a 68 build. Still deciding between 50 & 100. I've never owned or played a 100w Superlead. Closest I've come is a 1980 2203.

I really must try the G12M Heritage. And the current non-heritage G12M, there's a comparison vid somewhere and they came up favourably!

I'm sure there is something different about the G12Cs though. If you can try some G12M Heritage speakers then I strongly advise that you do that first. Even if you want to build a new amp either way, I still recommend those speakers. The G12-65 speakers I think were designed for the JCM800. They roll off a lot of high end I think. So aren't right for the older super leads.
Is your 73 definitely stock? As it should have more gain than a 68.

Believe so. It does kick out some gain at a healthy gig volume, with the PPIMV just rolling things down to minimise structural damage, but it's a much more hard rock / slash type of gain, rather than the 'holy crap, this amp is going to melt soon' VH thing that you can hear in the 68 clips previous, as well as the '74 clip I linked as well.Littlewyan wrote:

I will build something regardless, been hankering to do a full 68 build for a long time.

Fair enough mate . I might be building myself a 69 soon!
Just make sure you try those speakers with those amps, I don't think you'll look back once you do .

Re: 12-Series Build. UK Suppliers. Would 50w do the job?
Chaps,
Quick question. Van Halen's amp was a 68 100w 12-Series. I thought these were Tube rectified?
Looking at chassis's and comparing the JTM 45 and the JMP Plexi 50w, the chassis's look to be the same but the two holes at the back are used for Power Caps on a 68 or one power Cap and the Tube for the rectifier on the 45s.
Bit confused as I was certain that the 68-69 amps were distinct from the Metal-panel era in their tube rectifiers?
Also, if the JTM45 only used one of the two punched holes for a Power Cap, where is the other one? On the board?

AFAIK no 100W was ever produced with a tube rectifier (the very first prototypes maybe). And definitely not a 12 series. And by 68 even the 50 watters were diode rectified.
See where the other cap is ?

I guess I've heard people talk about the 'sag' in Van Halen's tone so assumed it was a Tube rectified circuit.
Well that certainly makes for a slightly easier build anyway!

Re: 12-Series Build. UK Suppliers. Would 50w do the job?
Depends on what I can get in the UK ideally. Friedman claims his 'brownest' amp is a 68 Plexi 50w and Friedman's Transformer of choice is, I think, Mercury Magnetics....bill bokey wrote:What transformers are you planning on using ?

I have just bought a set of Classic Tone for a 50W, I'll let you know how they sound but so far I have been very impressed with their products and they are cheap !
