Turntable question

My Dad gave me his no longer actively used Phillips #877 direct drive turntable, as I have vinyl I want to spin.
The question is, I have a newer stereo receiver/amp that has no specified phono connection with the ground, just an aux.
Plugged it in sans the ground, and the sound is uber weak.
Suggestions?
This turntable really is nice, he bought it in early '79, and is pristine.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The signal is quite a bit weaker than auxiliary / line level so you need a preamp to boost it with newer systems. You can get one at Radio Shack or you can find them cheaper online.

Cambridge Audio Azur 551p (or the older 540p) is a nice affordable option. Might not be available in the US though...

Really cheap phono preamps will sound very uninspiring.

Just a reminder, you need a dedicated PHONO premamp, not just a preamp. The phone standard amplifies according to a non- flat spectrum as specified by the RIAA.
