Jimi was new and had not had a show as the Experience in the US and didn't want to follow the Who. Anyway checkout the DVD, Townsend himself relates the story in the extras at the end.
Well Ill take your word for it before I get around to checking the DVD, 908, but if thats the way it went down, why would Jimi do what he did in the dressing room (threaten to "pull out all the stops") if he was going on second? You would think the ego's involved would not have wanted either of them to be a "warm-up" band for the other. My recollection was that the arguement was that neither one wanted to go on FIRST, but like I said, Ill give you the nod till I check the DVD. :? :? 8) 8)
Because they are both humble guys who didn't think they could measure up if they went last. Of course Jimi did go last and he new had to give a show of his life after following the Who and it being his first concert after becoming the Experience. Anyway his is the performance everyone remembers. Lighting the guitar on fire and all.

908 is right. Townsend did not want to play after Jimi (who would) any Jimi did want follow the The Who's show. Being bigger draw at the time Townsend pulled rank and told Jimi the Who would go on first and Jimi would follow. Jimi got up on the chair played some amazing stuff and then told Townsend, "Well, if you're gonna MAKE me go on after all I am gonna pull out all the stops" And the lighter fluid was summoned....Pretty mutual respect from both sides.

Is it wrong that my favorite moment of SRV was his appearance on MTV Unplugged?

In my opinion SRV Is only second to Jimi for the greatest, And to tell you the truth it is a very close second!! Just like Jimi I can never get enough of SRV. It would be fantastic if another guitarist would come along and blow the minds of the next gen. of player's the way they have !! Chad

he made some great songs and had a great tone on some recordings (not all, i think i prefered his tone on the live recordings, some studio takes were not as good).
he also has this funky albert king influence (and hendrix as well) that gives some great results , like "couldn't stand the wheather " !
but there are some songs i don't really like, maybe too "rockabilly" for me .
